A fully submersible PC with a clever heat dissipation system

A YouTuber has built a fully submersible PC, featuring cutting-edge hardware like an RTX 4090 GPU, and it looks absolutely stunning. We’ve seen liquid-cooled PCs before, but this one helps with heat dissipation in a really clever way – using water. This clever engineering also demonstrates how the heat dissipation benefits of submerging a PC could help with data centers, too.

At the heart of DIY Perks’ build is an acrylic cylinder, which would normally be a significant problem when it comes to heat dissipation. However, by connecting external copper pipes to the PC’s internal water cooling system, it allows the acrylic to be used as a heat sink.

The pipes enter and exit the cylinder via copper end caps, which are soldered for a watertight seal. The end caps are connected via rods, creating a tight seal using gaskets. Cabling enters through another copper pipe on the upper cap, which sits above the water surface to avoid a tricky water-tight seal.

The PC was submerged in DIY Perks’ two-meter garden pond, and initially, there was a minor buoyancy miscalculation. However, the coolant temperature increased by only a few degrees under sustained load, while the CPU stayed below 60 degrees C and the GPU below the low 40s.

“This is actually a pretty efficient way to cool a PC,” DIY Perks assures. “If you were to do this in a fish pond, you wouldn’t affect the temperature at all.” Even with swimmers present, it shouldn’t be a problem, but you might have a tough time finding an ergonomic solution.
