As you progress through the Diablo 4 story, you have the option to upgrade your gear to the next available rank. This is marked by a glow around the equipment piece and is accompanied by a significant increase in stats. However, as the rank increases, so does the challenge – different materials are required to upgrade different types of equipment. Here's when you should sell or salvage your gear in D4S.
Sell gear or salvage it at these levels
The best time to sell gear in D4S depends on which World Tier you’re currently in. If you’re in World Tier Three or above, it’s worth salvaging gear as you progress, as the rewards become more valuable. If you haven’t reached World Tier Three, you can sell your Magic items and below once you’re done with them, and you can sell your Rare items if you have plenty of Veiled Crystals to spare.

The materials you receive depend on the type of gear you’re destroying – armor, weapons, and jewelry all have their own materials. However, once you reach World Tier Three, you’ll start to see the same materials appear for different gear types. For example, Rawhide and Superior Leather appear for armor and weapon upgrades, and Iron Chunks and Silver Ore appear for all equipment.
When you reach World Tier Four, you’ll need to use different materials to upgrade different pieces of equipment. For armor and weapons, you’ll need materials like Veiled Crystal and Forgotten Souls. For jewelry, you’ll need materials like Unobtainium and Light of Merit.
