Diablo 4 Item Rarity Explained

Diablo 4 has a complicated system and set of rules when it comes to item rarity. While the developers aimed to avoid repetition in gear, there are still guidelines to understand. These guidelines help you build the perfect gear set as you progress through the different World Tiers in Diablo 4, enhancing your Diablo 4 builds.

Finding the Best Gear Sets in Diablo 4

Similar to the Diablo 4 tier system, the game's gear progression relies on offensive and defensive benefits. Your gear impacts your rune and skill choices as well as your playstyle from the first moments in Sanctuary to the final moments in World Tier Five. Upgrading your gear to Rare quality and above is crucial for finding the best gear set in Diablo 4, especially as you reach World Tier Three.

Diablo 4 Item Rarity

There are five tiers of Item Rarity in Diablo 4, each with its own drop chances and power levels. Higher Item Rarity gear can only be looted from drops that have a higher Item Rarity than your current gear. These drop-chance alterations at different World Tiers are part of the 'power scaling system' implemented by Blizzard.

The following are the gear types and rarities that are important for finding the best gear set in Diablo 4:

  • Common
  • Magic
  • Rare
  • Legendary
  • Unique

Uniques are a variation of Legendaries with fixed Imprints that grant special stats. They cannot be changed, but they have stat variations within the same rarity and item type. Uniques become essential for your Legendary and Unique gear sets when you reach World Tier Three, as they provide powerful bonuses to your skills and overall build.

Diablo 4 Gear Types and Rarities

Diablo 4 gear is categorized into different types and rarities. Some gear can have two rarities instead of just one. Each item type has its own rarity type, meaning a belt could be a Common, Legendary, Amulet, or Ring, for example.

Diablo 4 Gear Upgrade Levels

Gear of the same type and rarity can be upgraded using blueprints obtained from killing world bosses and completing challenges. Upgraded gear has an upgrade level, which adds a flat increase to all stats. Weapons are particularly important for overall damage as many skills are based on the weapon's type. However, gear with the correct Item Type and Rarity combination can unlock any skill in the game.

Visit a blacksmith or an armorer to upgrade gear of the appropriate Item Type and Rarity. Keep in mind that not all gear types can be upgraded by all NPCs. The NPCs in the Diablo 4 Shadow Falls East dungeon are particularly helpful due to their location. Make sure to max out your weapons' upgrades before finding a Legendary one, as the number of weapon upgrades is limited.

When heading to Diablo 4 World Tier Four, aim to wear a full set of upgraded Sacred Legendary or Unique Items. While powerful Imprints can be found on Legendary items by exploring the highest level zones at World Tier Four, Sacred or Ancestral gear will consistently drop to match your level.
