Diablo 4 Whirlwind Build

Looking for the Diablo 4 Whirlwind build? If you're a Diablo 4 Barbarian early on, leveling up can be tricky. Rushing ahead to Act 2 is an easy way to get knocked off your feet by powerful enemies, and it can be tough to know where to invest your skill points to get the DPS you need. Fortunately, there's a way to get massive AoE damage while maintaining powerful buffs, and it'll help you level up to max in no time.

The Whirlwind build aims to constantly batter enemies with constant AoE damage while maintaining powerful buffs. While many character builds in Action RPG games tend to gather strength as characters level up, the Whirlwind Barb focuses on dishing out impressive damage from the get-go. Our guide covers Active and Passive skill priority, Expertise, Stats, and Aspects.

Skill Priority

Here are the best skills for the Diablo 4 Whirlwind build:

  • Lunging Strike: The first skill point will go to Lunging Strike, a basic skill that is essential for early game Fury Generation and getting you into the action. Every skill point invested in a Whirlwind Barb buffs the previous skill and increases its duration, so you should prod your early skill tree ahead a few branches before developing the core skills.
  • Whirlwind: Whirlwind is the core skill of the Diablo 4 Whirlwind build. It provides constant AoE damage and Fury Drain, helping you eliminate multiple targets on the battlefield as soon as you enter combat. Crucially, it also helps keep your buffs active, so don't be afraid to top up your Fury if you're close to losing a powerful buff like War Cry.
  • Rallying Cry: Rallying Cry is a shout skill that increases Movement Speed and Resource Generation. The constant damage output of the Whirlwind Barb requires Resource Generation wherever you can get it, which is why we've chosen Rallying Cry.
  • War Cry: War Cry is a capsule AoE skill that provides a big damage increase and superior resource generation. Use this when you're in danger of running out of steam or in complacent situations where you can grind through enemies for extra damage and room for error.
  • Leap: Leap offers a fast jump attack that generates Fury and grants more room for error in your resource regeneration if it lands. It can also help you escape sticky situations like in Dungeons, where there are loads of deadly choke points.
  • Call of the Ancients: Call of the Ancients offers a huge defensive buff to you and your allies, summoning three immortal warriors to lay waste to your enemies in an instant. They don't go away either, so if you get caught up in a swarm of baddies, hit the Call of the Ancients skill to help out.

Obsessively casting Call of the Ancients for the Offensive Aspect will keep you alive, but without the Defensive Aspect, you will be cut to pieces by heavy enemies. Dispatch them before they even arrive by keeping your buffs up and your enemies out of the way. The biggest benefit of keeping Call of the Ancients active is the increased resource regeneration, which keeps the buffs coming, but you need to work constantly to maintain it.

Passive skills like Pressure Point and Booming Voice are just the tip of the iceberg in terms of enhanced benefits you can gain from active skills. While every passive makes your active skills stronger – and they usually do so in a very, very big way – there are a couple of skills that particularly benefit survival and keeping your buffs active with extra resources.

Whirlwind Barb's Expertise mechanic allows you to equip different passives based on weapon type, a neat feature that encourages experimentation with functional weapon types such as Swords and Axes. The benefit of two-handed weapons empowers you with some pretty beefy defensive passives, ensuring you can stay alive even against the most aggressive foes.

Whirlwind Barb is a melee, tanky Barbarian archetype, so make sure your Diablo IV gear is stacked with big Strength increases and high Armor for defense. It's easy to be distracted by big damage numbers in Diablo 4, but you run the risk of getting killed quicker, so always prioritize defensive stats first across your gear.

You can gain some offensive boosts in minor stats like attack speed and critical hit chance, but look out for specific gear with solid major stats. As Diablo 4 is a heavily-randomized ARPG, you need to pay attention to the specific numbers on your gear, but always prioritize items with major stats like Attack Speed, Attack Power, and Critical Hit Chance.
