Games shouldn't force players to relearn controls after a break, according to gamers on Resetera.

Games need a ‘refresh tutorial’ option, says Resetera user

A user on Resetera recently shared their experience of returning to R6 Siege after a period of time and feeling like they were playing a completely different game. In a lighthearted manner, they suggested the need for a tutorial on playing two games simultaneously with different control sets. Other users on the forum agreed that it can be challenging to switch between games and supported the idea of games providing a reminder when starting a saved game.

R6 Siege: A Familiar Game Turned New

The user began their post by stating, "I've been playing R6 lately, but it's been a while since I last played it. Now I'm not used to the controls anymore and I'm feeling frustrated. It feels like a whole new game, and I have to relearn everything."

They continued, "I've been playing Zelda as well. I've completed it twice before, but now that I'm playing it for the third time, I feel like I'm starting from scratch in many games. I don't understand why the controls aren't consistent."

The user added, "I really appreciate games that provide a recap when you start a saved game, like Professor Layton and Snake, for example."

They posed a question, "Why don't games do this for controls? Why don't they have a tutorial or a menu option to refresh your memory for games you've played before, especially for those who may have lost muscle memory?"

Another user replied, "I think it's called muscle amnesia."

"I don't know about you, but I've never done anything with my muscles," humorously remarked another user.

"I have a few games I really need to get back to," shared another user. "I bought Far Cry 5 a while ago but never got around to playing it."

"I'm in the same boat," responded another user. "I've played a couple of hours of Far Cry 5, and it's taking a lot of adjustment."

Games Needing More Guidance

"I think many games should include a gameplay tutorial or an index for moves and items," suggested another user. "Games like Yakuza and RDR2 just throw you in and expect you to know what you're doing."

"I remember being confused about the controls in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and having to look them up online," shared another user.

"I don't even need a tutorial," added another. "Just a summary of the story so far and a catch-up section to bring me up to speed on what's happened in the game. I've been playing Yakuza 6 for four years, and I have no idea what's going on."

"I use a wiki for the story recap," chimed in another user.

"I feel the same way," replied another user. "Usually, I lose interest in games if I don't get a recap of the story so far."

"Starting a fresh character until I feel confident enough to return to my main save is how I handle it," shared another user.

"I don't think a generic tutorial is the answer," stated another user. "Some games have really complicated systems, and I think a personalized tutorial based on individual players' progress is the way to go."

"I don't think a YouTube channel would work either," they added. "You'd have to create a new video every time the game is updated."

"Especially with live service games where new content is constantly added," replied another user. "I'll just hope that my main save is a bit more forgiving."
