Best Games of the 2020s So Far

What are the best games of the 2020s so far? There are so many incredible games in the second decade of this millennium, from AAA blockbusters like God of War Ragnarok and Ghost of Tsushima, to standout indie/AA games such as Hades and Disco Elysium.

With so many unforgettable experiences to choose from, it’s tough to pin down a list of the best games of the decade so far. We’ve tried our best though, and the following list reflects our experiences with the most impressive games released between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2023.

Doom Eternal and Hades

Doom Eternal is everything we could have wanted from a sequel to the legendary 2016 reboot. Over-the-top, next-level, and even more ridiculous than before, Eternal is everything we ever wanted in a Doom game. From the incredible set pieces and unique enemies, to the massive arsenal of upgradable weapons and brutal melee kills, Doom Eternal is a feast for the eyes and ears.

Hades is a standout indie/AA game, praised for its incredible story, gameplay, and high replayability. The unsettling and captivating adventure game takes the Dark Souls formula to the next level, and is ambitious in its design. Hades isn’t afraid to take risks, and is a prime example of how much developers can achieve with the right tools and vision.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon

Yakuza: Like a Dragon was one of the biggest and best AAA games of 2023, with an engaging open-world, rich combat, and an all-new story set in the fictional city of Koto. The game sees longtime series protagonist, Kiryu, walk away from the underworld, only to be forced back in when his surrogate daughter is kidnapped by the local crime lord.

Like a Dragon is a return to form for the Yakuza series, and is well deserving of the praise it has received. While it isn’t the only big Yakuza release this decade, it is easily one of the best.

Demon’s Souls Remake

Despite a rocky launch, the Demon’s Souls Remake is one of the best games of the decade so far. Demon’s Souls Remake is a stunning reimagining of the 2009 classic, and is a must-play for fans of Soulsborne games. While the combat feels different to the likes of Dark Souls and Bloodborne, it still retains that signature From Software feel, and the bosses are just as challenging as ever.

Disco Elysium

Disco Elysium is a game that demands your attention. It’s a slow burn, with a compelling sci-fi world, and a unique storytelling mechanic that leaves a lot up to the player’s imagination. The game tells a deeply provocative work of art, and more than a few players have named Disco Elysium their favorite game of the year – and of all time.

With a unique manual, rather than a traditional game script, Disco Elysium allows you to determine how the game progresses, and leads you along the path you decide. It’s an experience like no other, and it’s not hard to see why so many players have fallen in love with the game.

God of War Ragnarok

God of War Ragnarok was the first mainline game in the series since 2013, and it quickly became a fan favorite. Taking players on a journey through Norse mythology, God of War Ragnarok is an epic tale of family, revenge, and the bonds we forge along the way.

With stunning environments, exhilarating combat, and a touching story, God of War Ragnarok is one of the best games of the decade so far. It also introduced one of the best new characters of the decade in Val, and we can’t wait to play as her again in God of War Tempest.

Ghost of Tsushima

Ghost of Tsushima is a stunning open-world game, and one of the best samurai games ever made. Set in a fictional recreation of feudal Japan, Ghost of Tsushima takes players across its stunning vistas on horseback, using weapons and stealth to take down enemy samurai.
