The most disappointing games of 2023 are:
Anthem
Anthem’s flying time was so short that players could complete the story campaign in a single day, and the bullet sponge bosses and frustrating matchmaking led fans to call the game “Anthemgate”. It’s no surprise that BioWare’s newest game is among the most disappointing games of 2023, as its short story mode, repetitive gameplay, and lack of new content have made it clear that it’s not worth the money.
We gave Anthem a 3/5 in our Anthem review, highlighting the fun and exhilarating combat, but expressing disappointment in the lack of innovation and the story that left us with unanswered questions.
Battlefield 2042
Battlefield 2042 has been plagued by management decisions that many fans feel have compromised the game’s potential, as well as the lack of a satisfying multiplayer experience. Despite its promising single-player campaign, Battlefield 2042 has been criticized for not delivering on the promise of its initial DLC plans, as well as its lack of innovative gameplay and repetitive nature.
Avengers game
After years of waiting, the Avengers game finally arrived in 2023, but players were left with more questions than answers and a feeling that the game’s potential wasn’t fully realized. The game’s strange cutscenes left players scratching their heads, while the lack of new content and repetitive gameplay disappointed fans who were hoping for a fresh take on the famous IP.
Overwatch 2
The decision to cancel its promised story progression PvE mode was a major letdown for Overwatch 2 players, especially after the game’s predecessor kept fans entertained with consistent updates. While the multiplayer game has its charm, many players were looking forward to a new and improved experience.
As a result of the disappointment, many users have lost faith in pre-ordering games, and are being more cautious about their expectations. Some users argue that the disappointing games highlight the importance of delivering on promises and properly managing game development, as well as the need for more linear, story-driven experiences instead of focusing solely on open-world gameplay.
Others express frustration with the gaming industry’s trend of prioritizing profit over quality, leading to rushed and unfinished games that leave players disappointed.
Despite the letdowns, there are still games like Battlefield 1 that stand out as fantastic experiences, with their historical settings and engaging gameplay. Ultimately, the disappointment with these games serves as a reminder to gamers that not every highly anticipated release will live up to expectations.
