What Disney characters deserve their own movie?

Some of the best characters in the House of Mouse are criminally unsung, and we’d love to see these enigmatic individuals shine in their own adventure movies.

They may be minor characters in movies with established leads, but these unsung heroes and villains have the potential to captivate audiences and add new dimensions to the Disney universe. We’re talking Sergeant Calhoun from Wreck-It Ralph, who deserves a whole movie to show off her no-nonsense, butt-kicking demeanor. We’re also talking Professor Ratigan from The Great Mouse Detective, because the charismatic Napoleon of Crime would make for a thrilling leading man.

So, in the spirit of giving these characters their due, we’ve assembled a list of Disney characters we’d love to see get their own movie. From Moana to Hercules, there’s something for everyone on this list, and we’re sure you’ll agree that these characters are more than ready to step into the limelight.

Here are the unsung Disney characters who deserve their own movie:

  1. Maui from Moana
  2. We’d love to see the demigod’s rich mythological backstory explored in his own movie. The demigods of Polynesian folklore are fascinating, and Maui’s tale is ripe for exploration.

  3. Nani
  4. Nani has seen more than her fair share of hardship. She’s a relatable teenager who’s forced to be a parental figure to her little sister, despite being a little sister herself. Watching her struggle and grow would make for a poignant coming-of-age story.

  5. Hades
  6. With Hercules now officially a part of the Disney canon, we have the opportunity to delve into the Greek mythology origins of Hercules’ famous nemesis. Hades isn’t just a villain, he’s a beloved villain, and we’d love to see a movie about his rise to power as the Lord of the Underworld, and his eternal feud with his brother, Zeus.

  7. Flynn
  8. Flynn is charming, pretty handy with a sword, and has a history of daring heists. If a Disney film has ever screamed ‘high seas adventure,’ it’s Tangled. We’d love to see Flynn and his sidekick horse, Max, in a swashbuckling movie that would make Pirates of the Caribbean blush.

  9. Jessie
  10. Jessie has a rich history beyond Toy Story, and a prequel would be the perfect opportunity to fill in the gaps of her past. Who was her first owner? What are the reasons behind her emotional walls? These are just a few of the questions we’d love to see answered in a Jessie origin story.

  11. Alma Madrigal
  12. Alma is a complex, layered character with a dark past. She’s the villain of the movie Encanto, but that doesn’t negate the fact that she’s a fully developed, flawed, and relatable person. A film about Alma’s life before she was cursed with eternal youth would be a fascinating character study and an opportunity to give a lesser-known Disney villain her time to shine.

  13. Frozone
  14. Frozone may be a supporting hero in The Incredibles, but his superpowers are equal to those of Mr. Incredible. A film about his early days as a superhero would be a welcome addition to the Pixar universe and give fans a chance to see just how powerful his ice powers are.

  15. Ursula
  16. Ursula is one of Disney’s greatest villains, and her theatrical background makes her the perfect antagonist for The Little Mermaid’s heroine, Ariel. A film about Ursula’s banishment and her conflict with King Triton would be a delight to behold.

  17. Randall
  18. Randall is an intriguing character whose backstory is explored in the TV series, Follow Your Heart, but a movie would be the perfect place for him to tell his story in a more comprehensive way.

  19. Frollo
  20. Frollo is one of the most complex characters in Disney history, and his struggle with his sexuality is just one of many reasons he deserves a movie.
