Game Series That Have Lost Their Appeal
What game series have you given up on? Maybe you’ve been with them since the beginning and have had enough of their repetitive, predatory gameplay. Maybe you’re just sick of paying an arm and a leg for a game that offers little innovation year after year.
Whatever the reason, some of the biggest game series have lost their appeal for a number of PC Game Spotlight readers, as we’ve asked you which games you’ve abandoned or intend to abandon.
The sports games, such as FIFA, NBA 2K, and Madden, are particularly disliked, with many feeling that they are just getting more and more expensive with little innovation, and that microtransactions have become increasingly predatory.
Another big series that many say they have abandoned is World of Warcraft, mainly due to its time-consuming nature and the difficulty of keeping up with it while working full-time. I’d argue that if you want to play it, you should take a break from work, but I’m sure many bosses would disagree.
A number of users cite the decline of Mario Kart for them, with newer games in the series like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe just not providing the same level of fun as older, less realistic games like NFS Underground 2 and Midnight Club.
Some still enjoy Mario Kart, but find that racing simulators, such as Forza Horizons and The Crew, have lost their appeal, with the more realistic gameplay mechanics and focus on realism being cited as the reason.
The Assassin’s Creed series gets a lot of flak, with many saying they have lost interest in the long, convoluted stories. Others cite a decline in story quality as the games have tried to go open-world, while still others point to the fact that the Desmond story was abandoned and the focus shifted to releasing more games.
Destiny also gets some flack for a decline in story quality, complicated gear mechanics, and microtransactions, although many still play the game and say that it is still enjoyable.
Call of Duty also gets a lot of flak with many saying they have abandoned the series due to a new matchmaking system and gameplay catering to certain playstyles.
It seems like overall, many have given up on game series due to a lack of innovation, repetitive gameplay, and the feeling that the games are just not enjoyable anymore.
