The Talos Principle: A Game of Second Chances

Have you ever given up on a game, only to return to it years later and be glad you did? That’s what happened to me with The Talos Principle. I couldn’t wrap my head around a new puzzle mechanic introduced halfway through the game, so I stopped playing. But when I gave it another go, I loved it.

There are plenty of other gamers who have similar stories to tell, and a recent thread on Reddit is collecting them. Some users mention Mass Effect as a game they initially quit but later came back to and loved. Some found the first game slow or clunky compared to the later ones, but others loved its tone and the world it built.

Others mention Jedi Fallen Order, which many were disappointed with at first, but later came back to and found enjoyable. Others still mention Bloodborne, which many struggled with at first but found addictive once they gave it another chance. Dark Souls and Dishonored were mentioned as well.

Here are some of the other games that didn’t click at first but became favorites when users returned to them later:

  • The Witcher 3 was mentioned a few times, with some saying they found it overwhelming or boring at first. But others say they’ve seen similar threads around the game, and that it just takes a fresh perspective or a different mindset to appreciate a game that didn’t initially capture your interest.
  • Cyberpunk 2077
  • Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus

But it seems it’s just sometimes the case that it takes a new perspective or a bit of time to really fall in love with a game that didn’t initially capture your attention.

If you’ve ever had a game you initially gave up on come back and become one of your favorites, be sure to mention it in the comments below. And if you’re looking for a new game to try, we’ve got guides and recommendations for the best upcoming games, the best multiplayer games, and more.
