The Circle of Spores Druid

Want to know more about the Dungeons & Dragons Circle of Spores Druid? Unlike many of the more traditional nature-themed spellcasters, the Circle of Spores Druid focuses on the decomposers that are essential to any ecosystem. You’ll find plenty of fungi and decay in a druid who draws power from the Circle of Spores, making it a potentially dangerous but rewarding playstyle.

The Circle of Spores Druid was released as part of the Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica supplement and offers a unique, fungi-based playstyle. Unlike most druids, the Circle of Spores Druid doesn’t rely on wildshape for protection, making survivability a priority. This Dungeons & Dragons subclass also favours melee combat and deals plenty of damage, as well as utilizing poison damage. Here’s everything you need to know about the Circle of Spores Druid.

Dungeons & Dragons Circle of Spores Druid

The Dungeons & Dragons Circle of Spores Druid has the following ability scores:

  • Constitution is crucial for a Spore Druid as it provides hitpoints for close-range combat. Since the druid doesn’t need to rely on spells for combat, getting Wisdom to 14 is necessary to improve spellcasting and accuracy for melee attacks. Since the druid can’t wear metal armour or use a shield, it also needs a decent amount of Dexterity for defense. Charisma is less important as this subclass doesn’t rely on druidic circles, but it may be useful for interactions with other druids or nature-related situations.
  • Intelligence has limited impact on a Spore Druid as they rely on their spells and druidic magic, though skills like nature lore can benefit. The ability score can be handy if you want to take advantage of druid cantrips like druidcraft, but these spells may not align well with the fungi-themed or Underdark setting of a Spore Druid. Since a Spore Druid can certainly use spells outside of their subclass, getting Wisdom to 14 is a good idea, but Strength can be left at 13.

Different ancestries in Dungeons & Dragons provide additional abilities and bonuses, which can enhance the playstyle of a Circle of Spores Druid. The most popular options are the Fairy ancestry and the Duergar Dwarf ancestry. The Fairy ancestry grants a flying speed and access to spells like faerie fire and enlarge/reduce, while the Duergar Dwarf ancestry provides poison resistance along with Enlarge/Reduce and Invisibility spells.

Firbolg ancestry offers abilities like detect magic and disguise self, as well as advantage on charisma checks with animals and plants. Other backgrounds can offer useful skill checks, with options like leading a symbolic act of protest against an unpopular decree granting proficiency in history and persuasion.

Now that you know everything there is to know about the Dungeons & Dragons Circle of Spores Druid, it’s time to get out there and embrace the power of fungi. If you’re looking for something a little bit different, we’ve got everything you need to know about the Druid subclass in the fifth edition of Dungeons & Dragons, as well as other popular options like the Bear Totem Barbarian, Monk, and Life or Nature Cleric.
