How to Play as a Thri-Kreen

Thri-Kreen are one of the most unique Dungeons & Dragons races, to the point where you cannot play as one in 5e without taking a feat or prestige class. Distinguishing between male and female Thri-Kreen is exceptionally difficult as they do not have gendered names and offer no visual gender characteristics.

Thri-Kreen communicate through clicks, buzzing, and clacking noises, making their language challenging to understand. Since they are not humanoids, it’s also nearly impossible to read their body language and expressions.

Thri-Kreen have a short lifespan, with most not living past the age of 25. This is due to battles, protection of their families, or natural causes. However, if you’re already a Thri-Kreen and wish to extend your lifespan, you may have to consider a method outside of natural causes.

Thri-Kreen Habitat

Thri-Kreen are best suited for arid and hot environments where they can utilize their chameleon ability to blend in and remain stealthy. These mantis-like creatures are most commonly found in deserts, sand dunes, or grassy plains.

As such, introducing Thri-Kreen to your favorite desert campaign or incorporating them as an enemy can make for quite the interesting encounter.

Thri-Kreen Combat

Thri-Kreen are dangerous warriors who attack mercilessly and without guilt. They often possess high attack bonuses and proficiency in weapons and armor, making them a challenging opponent for any player.

Thri-Kreen are primarily carnivorous, consuming creatures like bison, horses, and even other humanoids during times of famine. However, outside of famine, they will only consume meat when they’re convinced of its necessity.

In order to craft Thri-Kreen armor, you’ll need to acquire a Thri-Kreen exoskeleton and tan the hide using Thri-Kreen urine. It’s not an ideal process, but it’s better than dying while trying to acquire it.
