Most Expensive Dungeons & Dragons Spells
Looking for the most expensive Dungeons & Dragons spells? True friendship is priceless, but that doesn’t mean you can’t splash out on the occasional resurrection – with a price tag to match. With material components that have gold costs, spellcasting in the fantasy RPG can get pretty expensive.
There are some high-level spells that require a hefty cost to bring back characters to life. Resurrection requires 1,000 gold pieces to bring back a deceased character who died with a soul that still exists. Reincarnate requires a 1,000 gold pieces per character level of the deceased creature to bring back their soul from the Astral Plane. Both are high-level spells and can only be cast by clerics.
Other spells with costly material components include Forcecage, which creates a magical prison and requires 1,500 gold pieces worth of ruby dust, and Contingency, which allows you to delay the effect of another spell until a certain condition is met, but it requires an ivory statuette worth at least 1,500 gold pieces.
Of course, you could always cast a spell to bind a celestial, elemental, fey, or fiend to your service. It’s going to cost you though – anywhere between 1,000 and 25,000 gold pieces. Simulacrum is another costly spell, created a duplicate of a creature at the cost of 1,500 gold pieces worth of ruby dust.
Clone is another spell that allows you to create a duplicate of yourself at the cost of a diamond and a container worth a total of 3,000 gold pieces. Of course, this doesn’t include the gold you’ll need to buy the items to put in the container.
Gate is a powerful conjuration spell that requires a diamond worth at least 5,000 gold pieces. The Gate spell can be used to teleport, but it’s also the only way to get a ghaele into servitude. The ghaele is an angelic servant that can bring light to an area and remove darkness.
We’ve saved the most costly spell for last, as you’re probably not going to be using it anytime soon. Sequester is a transmutation spell that can make a willing target invisible and undetectable. For this spell to work, you need powdered diamonds, rubies, emeralds, or sapphires worth 5,000 gold pieces.
