Discovering the best FPS single player campaigns
If you are looking for some of the best FPS Single Player games that aren’t Half-Life, there are plenty of other incredible shooters to play, from Titanfall 2 to Portal, and Doom to Halo. Despite its storied history, the FPS genre is far from being a one-trick pony, with plenty of games offering up incredible single player campaigns despite not being as widely renowned as Valve’s space-marine simulator.
We all have our favorite game
We all have our favorite game, be it Half-Life 2, Halo: Combat Evolved, or Doom 2, but sometimes we just want to experience something new. With that in mind, here are some of the best FPS single player campaigns that you might not have played.
From Titanfall 2 to Portal: A Consensus on the FPS Single Player Experiences
Titanfall 2 is a great example of an exceptional shooter campaign, and is hailed as such by gamers. Its movement and gameplay are just exceptional, and even despite a dwindling user base, the single player campaign remains highly regarded.
“Protocol 3 and unforgettable moments: Why Titanfall 2 is a must-play single player FPS”
Indisputable: Titanfall 2’s single player campaign receives widespread acclaim
There’s no doubt that Titanfall 2’s single player campaign is an indisputable classic, with the gameplay and movement on show here standing as some of the best in any shooter. Despite a dwindling user base, and a multiplayer component that was never fully realised, Titanfall 2’s single player campaign remains widely regarded as one of the best, or at least most memorable.
Why is that? Well, it may be down to the immersive world and story that Respawn has constructed. Protocol 3 sees you taking on the role of Jack Cooper, a militia grunt with aspirations of becoming a pilot. Things take a turn for the worse when you come across a suit of Titan technology, which you use to take down an IMC carrier ship. Things then spiral out of control as the Militia and IMC scramble for control of the technology.
Despite this being a fairly common videogame trope, Respawn manages to weave an interesting, emotional tale that serves as a great introduction to the world of Piloting, as well as building a rapport with your Titan, BT. The gameplay itself is also a lot of fun, and the movement is fantastic, so if you haven’t played Titanfall 2, or just haven’t played the campaign, you’re missing out.
F.E.A.R.: A forgotten classic with exceptional AI and horror elements
F.E.A.R. has, over the years, earned a reputation as one of the best first-person shooters on PC, but its story and setting also resonate with horror fans, despite the series never really being that scary. The AI and enemy encounters are exceptional, the setting and atmosphere are memorable, and the protagonist is one of the best you’ll find in gaming.
Set in a parallel universe to the one seen in 2011’s F.3.A.R., the game casts you as special forces soldier, Sgt. Beckett. After a routine mission goes terribly wrong, Beckett finds himself in a parallel world where his son has never existed, Alma is still alive, and a new foe, the Replica, has risen up in her place.
The action is fast and furious, with some truly memorable firefights. The enemy AI is on point, often putting you in situations where you have to think on your feet, using the environment to your advantage. What really stands the game out though is the setting and the character of Alma. The abandoned military complex where the game takes place is an atmospheric and claustrophobic location, while the childlike Alma is genuinely unnerving to face off against.
