Guild Wars 2: A Gem of an MMO That Deserves More Attention

One user says Guild Wars 2 is the best MMO they’ve ever played, going so far as to express surprise that the game didn’t become more popular. Another user praises the game’s fluid combat, and another references the engaging story. It’s not just ArenaNet’s own Forsaken that has people talking – it’s the whole game.

“Guild Wars 2 is the best MMO I’ve ever played, and I don’t understand why it’s not more popular,” one Redditor writes. “I have a lot of fond memories from it, especially when I look back at the amazing dynamic gameplay and the fluid combat.”

This is far from the only positive comment about Guild Wars 2. Another user responds by referencing the combat and story, while another mentions that the game’s PvP is particularly enjoyable.

“I’m surprised it didn’t become more popular,” another user writes. “The combat is so much better than the [first] game and I really enjoyed the dynamic events, which weren’t all just kill x number of zergs.”

There are also a few less-than-positive comments, with one user saying they had a negative experience with the game and found it overwhelming. “The community is pretty harsh, I’m not a very social player so I wasn’t prepared for that,” the user writes.

“I started playing in 2013, and I remember the game being better back then than it is now,” another user responds. “Free-to-play ruined it.” Other users argue that free-to-play didn’t introduce toxicity into the game, and that the problem was already present before Guild Wars 2 became free-to-play.

“ArenaNet should just give up and make an Action-RTS game where you can be a Jedi and use the Force,” one user writes, referencing the cool elements of Star Wars: The Old Republic that they found disappointing. Another user chimes in to say that, while they like Final Fantasy XIV, they agree that it takes time to really see its good gameplay.

A number of other comments reference the grindy nature of many MMOs, with some users expressing their enjoyment of it and others saying it’s unappealing. “The memes are real,” one user writes, alongside a picture of World of Warcraft at the top of a list of MMOs. Some users defend Guild Wars 2, saying it has great gameplay that is far from stale or mediocre.

This user also defends the inclusion of Final Fantasy XIV, which some users criticized for appearing at the top of the list. “I have played [FFXIV] for a long time and still enjoy the gameplay,” another user replies. “It’s never been the most popular MMO but it’s not bad and it’s definitely not the worst MMO.”

This leads to a discussion about downvoting, with some users expressing their belief that ArenaNet is aware of the issue and others saying that it’s important to vote on posts because of the potential for community hostility.
