Pokemon Sleep: An Immersive Sleeping Experience
The Pokemon Company recently invited me to a unique and exciting event - a Pokemon Sleepover. This exclusive event gave me the opportunity to try out their upcoming sleep tracking game, Pokemon Sleep, designed for Mobile devices. And let me tell you, it was an experience like no other.
At first glance, Pokemon Sleep may seem like your typical sleep tracker app, but it offers so much more. The gameplay, reminiscent of the popular Pokemon Go, is both complex and engaging. It immerses you in a world where your sleep becomes a vital part of the game.
You might be wondering why a sleep tracker would invite a journalist to a sleepover. Well, the answer lies in the game's unique goal - to help Professor Neroil research Drowsy Power, an intriguing ability possessed by Snorlax. This ability attracts wild Pokemon to sleep, and by playing the game, you contribute to Professor Neroil's quest to understand this mysterious power.
During the day, you have the opportunity to feed your Snorlax, increasing its Drowsy Power. Berries collected by the Pokemon on your team allow you to enhance your Snorlax's abilities. Additionally, you can cook meals for Snorlax using resources earned or purchased, which have long-term effects on your sleep points.
Every week, you begin with a new Snorlax and must build up its power over the course of the week. Sleeping becomes a crucial aspect of the game, as it not only earns you points but also unlocks consumable items. These points can be converted into currency, which allows you to purchase even more items to enhance your gameplay.
The app diligently tracks your sleep, rewarding you based on the quality and duration of your slumber. It even provides insights into when you were tossing and turning versus sleeping soundly. While it may resemble other sleep tracking apps like Sleep Cycle or Sleep as Android, Pokemon Sleep adds a unique and enjoyable game element to the experience, making it more entertaining and less clinical.
A World of Sleep and Pokemon
Pokemon Sleep features a diverse collection of 100 different Pokemon, each with their own distinct sleeping styles. Some Pokemon, such as Togepi and Ho-oh, require minimal effort to sleep, while others like Bulbasaur, Charmander, and Mewtwo demand more attention and effort.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the game is the ability to build a team of elite Snorlax feeders, allowing you to earn even more points. Additionally, the app includes a comprehensive sleep tracker, providing you with detailed information on your sleep patterns and quality.
Points earned in the game unlock consumable items, which can be purchased using a second currency called Diamonds. Diamonds can be obtained through gameplay or by using real money. The game offers two different shops - a normal shop and a premium shop, accessible through a $10/month Premium Sleep Pass. The range of items available in these shops varies from $0.99 to $39.99.
Overall, my experience with Pokemon Sleep was incredibly enjoyable and engaging, akin to playing Pokemon Go. While the sleep tracking aspect felt familiar, the game element added a new layer of excitement and potentially improved sleep quality.
It's important to note that Pokemon Sleep is not a medical app, but rather falls under the category of wellness-tainment. It offers a light-hearted way to engage with your health and potentially enhance your sleep.
Although I only had a limited amount of time with the app, it provided valuable tips and insights into sleep patterns. Its primary objective is to make the process of falling asleep and waking up more enjoyable.
There is still much to discover about Pokemon Sleep, such as the specific sleep requirements of each Pokemon type and the effectiveness of the sleep tracking feature. The game is set to launch in November, giving us ample time to explore its many features and benefits.
