Project L
A new Project L developer diary and gameplay trailer offer a closer look at Riot Games’ upcoming 2v2 fighting game, with a playable build headed to the Evo 2023 fighting game tournament in August. The trailer showcases a full 2v2 match, while the developer diary gives a peek at Project L’s tag-team mechanics and more, offering a glimpse at what players can expect from the game’s free beta and future releases.
Project L will be playable at Evo 2023, and a playable build of the game will be available to everyone there. While the gameplay trailer showcases an entire 2v2 match, developer Riot Games says that Project L’s duo-play mechanics are inspired by tag-team wrestling, with one fighter controlled entirely by the first player and the other waiting offscreen ready to enter the fight.
“We wanted to really promote teamwork,” game director Shaun Rivera says in the developer diary. “So when you see those moments where someone takes the fall for you, where you save each other in clutch moments, that’s what we’re trying to promote.” Rivera explains that Project L supports 1v1, 2v2, and 2v1 matchups, and wants players to feel free to choose their preferred playstyle.
The developer diary also introduces the Fuse system, which will impact how fighters play together and offer strategic choices to players. Rivera says the video showcases the 2X Assist Fuse, which allows players to perform two assists consecutively. Other Fuses appear to impact movement speed, fighter damage, or even how many rounds there are in a given match.
A playable build of Project L will be available to everyone at Evo 2023, and Riot says it will share more updates and details “in the near future.”
