The Tekken 8 director speaks out against “silly threats” made by fans regarding the fighting game’s roster. While threats made to game developers have serious consequences including increased security costs and the potential cancellation of event appearances, Harada explains that such behavior actually hinders fans’ chances of seeing their favorite characters added to the upcoming game. Harada also explains that company founders and board members may respond to such threats by canceling planned character inclusions.

“I know it’s been a while since the closed network test, but there’s something I’ve been thinking about lately,” Harada begins his message, which was shared on Twitter. “It’s about the way some people express their opinions about the characters that should be in the next Tekken game.”

Harada goes on to explain that threats made in the name of the Tekken community make it difficult to gauge public opinion versus the opinions of a few individuals. When company founders and board members receive threats regarding character inclusions in upcoming games, they may respond by canceling planned character inclusions. The development staff’s motivation also decreases when they receive threats, making them less likely to act on fan requests.

“Threats made by people who claim to be part of the ‘Tekken community’ are a problem,” Harada says. He adds, “People who make threats should reflect on what they’re saying and how they’re saying it. Threats are a means of intimidation, and that’s not how you convince people. And if you’re making threats, you’re not part of the ‘Tekken community’; you’re just a nuisance.”

Harada’s message also emphasizes the need for respect and normal behavior when interacting with game developers. “Game developers who are working on the next Tekken game are people just like you,” he says. “They’re people who are passionate about Tekken, who are working hard on the game, and who want to put out a good product. So when the game comes out, go buy it, play it, and enjoy it. And when you want to see a certain character in the game, act like a normal human being and ask them politely. Game developers will listen to what you have to say.”

The Tekken 8 closed network test recently concluded, but the game’s base roster remains a mystery. Fans have been requesting characters for the game, with some going so far as to make aggressive and inappropriate threats. While Harada’s message doesn’t address the base roster, he does suggest that fans understand that characters will be added to Tekken 8 when the time is right.
