The PS5 Pro has a name

The PS5 Pro has a name, and it sounds like we might not have to wait too long to find out what it is. Speaking to Kotaku’s Stephen Totilo, an unnamed developer claims that they and other creators will receive PS5 Pro dev kits by the end of this year. While that doesn’t confirm an imminent announcement, it does suggest that we could see the new PlayStation sooner rather than later.

Potential 'Pro' versions for both Xbox and PlayStation

We’ve heard rumors about potential “Pro” versions for both the Xbox and PlayStation for some time now, but neither Microsoft nor Sony have confirmed that we’ll be seeing mid-generation updates. That hasn’t stopped the chatter, and several insiders have previously suggested that Sony is working on something codenamed “Project Trinity.”

Apparently, that project is already in the works, as this developer says that demos are already happening, and most studios will be getting their kits by the end of 2023. As for the name, they say that it’s “something biblical,” but it sounds like it won’t be anything too ostentatious.

“[It] won’t be ‘Pro,’” they say, “but the name is something biblical and I can’t remember what it is.” Generally, PlayStation codenames are drawn from pop culture references, most notably The Matrix. So, if this information is accurate, we could be looking at PlayStation Trinity or something similar.

What to expect from the PS5 Pro

The report also provides some additional information about what we can expect from the PS5 Pro. Apparently, it will aim for “improved and consistent FPS at 4K resolution,” and we can also expect a new performance mode for 8K, which will presumably offer even greater capabilities.

“Accelerated” ray tracing will also be a focal point, which will come as no surprise to anyone who has kept track of the console space over the past couple of years. Sony, Microsoft, and even the likes of Nvidia have all been pushing the technology as the next big thing, so it makes sense that it would be a big focus for the PlayStation 5.

We’ll have to wait and see if any of these rumors turn out to be true, but they do sound plausible. We already know that Sony has been working on something called “Project Trinity” since early 2022, and several insiders have already suggested that devs will be getting their kits before the end of this year.

The PS5 Pro release date is likely still a ways off, and specific details about its capabilities are still a little hazy. However, if the reports are accurate, then we can at least expect an announcement sooner rather than later, and that’s something to look forward to.
