Sony's Project Q: A Vita with a DualShock

Sony’s announcement of the PlayStation Project Q handheld received mixed reactions, as the device’s simplistic design sparked debates over whether the device would be a worthy successor to the PlayStation Vita. While leaked images of Project Q surfaced earlier, new videos showcasing the device’s inner workings have now been shared on the internet, and the handheld appears to be a Vita with a DualShock controller attached to it.

The PlayStation Project Q leaks come from the same source as the prior images, which were shared on Imgur before being picked up by Reddit and Twitter. The new videos give us a better understanding of what the device will be capable of, and they also serve to confirm that Project Q is running on a modified version of Android’s operating system.

The first video shows off the Project Q home screen and several of its apps. The device is also shown to be utilizing a DualSense controller, which means that it has motion controls and a touchpad.

The footage also reveals that Project Q is running a ‘PlayStation’ app, which presumably allows you to manage your PlayStation Network account and purchases. This suggests that the device may lack a unique operating system like previous PlayStation handhelds, and it could mean that the device is capable of running Android apps in the future.

Sony has been mostly quiet about Project Q, save for a brief announcement and a few comments from Sony CEO Kenichiro Yoshida. The device is expected to release sometime this year, but we have yet to learn about its pricing or specs.
