How to Have a Baby in Stardew Valley
Want to know if you can have a Stardew Valley baby? If the bond with the spouse is strong enough, getting married will lead to a discussion about starting a family. However, there are several requirements that need to be met before having children.
Becoming a parent in Stardew Valley mirrors real life. You need to spend ample time with your future spouse, get married, have enough finances to upgrade the farmhouse, and be prepared for the significant commitment. After fulfilling these prerequisites, you can choose whether or not to have children with your partner.
Steps to Have a Baby in Stardew Valley
In Stardew Valley, players can have one boy and one girl child. The gender of the first child is random, but it will always be the opposite gender of the spouse. If the firstborn is male, the second child can be either gender. Please note that you can only have a maximum of two children, so ensure that you are ready for the responsibilities.
When you choose to have children, the baby is born, or the adoption process is completed after 14 days if you prefer adopting a child from Robin the carpenter's list. If you decline having children, there are no consequences, and you can ask again as long as you still meet the requirements. However, keep in mind that children in Stardew Valley only grow up as toddlers. If Evie or Tom Jr. are your favorite children, you may want to refer to our Stardew Valley toddlers guide for more information.
Once you are married and before the children are born or adopted, the crib in your farmhouse will disappear. Once the child reaches the toddler stage, the crib can be removed, and they will instead sleep near the bed in the second room of your farmhouse.
How to Get Married in Stardew Valley
While having children is a significant milestone, marriage is a prerequisite for starting a family. In Stardew Valley, to get married, players need to reach a friendship level of eight hearts with a marriage candidate. Once this level is achieved, the flirt icons over their face will be replaced with heart icons. You can then gift them a bouquet to ask for their hand in marriage.
Once you have reached ten hearts with your beloved, you can purchase the Mermaid's Pendant to propose marriage. The wedding ceremony will take place three days later (the time is shortened if you possess the Unique Ring, which can be obtained as a quest reward from Evelyn).
Keep in mind that marriage is not just a symbolic act, but a legally binding partnership. Your spouse will move in with you on the farm, and you must maintain a good relationship with them. If you argue with them excessively, they may move out and live in the saloon. As long as you regularly interact with them by giving their favorite gifts (learn their preferences from the Stardew Valley spouse likes list) and avoid actions that upset them, you should be able to maintain a happy marriage.
To be married for a week, you need to be married to someone and have an upgraded farmhouse. The initial farmhouse has only one room, but it can be upgraded before marriage. Mine the two red mineshaft rocks near the Skull Shrine to obtain the necessary materials and purchase the Carpenter's Workbench from Robin. The first upgrade adds a kitchen, but you can choose to add an additional room instead, which would be perfect for a nursery. With all these requirements met, you and your child-rearing partner can create your very own Stardew Valley baby sign, complete with a poop emoji!
