What are the “top 5 games everyone should play before they die”? It’s a question we’ve all asked ourselves, and now that we’re all playing more and more great games, it’s more important than ever to make sure you’re not missing out on classics. Fortunately, the GOG community has come to the rescue with their recommendations, which span a huge variety of genres.

Our Top 5 Games

Our very own top 5 list includes Baldur’s Gate 3, Portal 2, and other great RPGs like Hades, but we’ve also gathered some more recommendations from the GOG community to give you more ideas. They include games like Half-Life 2, Bioshock, Baldur’s Gate 3, Portal 2, and more, so you’ll definitely want to take a look at what everyone thinks are the best games.

“Baldur’s Gate 3 is everything I want in an RPG”

“I’m surprised this hasn’t been mentioned yet,” one user writes. “Baldur’s Gate 3 is everything I want in an RPG. It has an amazing story, great characters, lots of choices and consequences, and fun combat. The attention to detail, as well as the love put into this game, is just overwhelming. The writing is amazing, and I think it’s a great experience even for those who haven’t played the first two games.”

“Definitely get the first two if you can,” another replies, “but it’s not required. I haven’t played them, and I absolutely loved BG3.” Another says that the game is “better than the classics” and that anyone who disagrees should “eat a sock.”

“Play Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2 first”

Others mention the greatness of Baldur’s Gate 3, but one user says they “can’t help but recommend the first two games as well”, while another says “if you play 1 and 2, you can get 3 for half the price, so I highly recommend it.”

“I haven’t played 1 and 2 yet,” another replies, “but I don’t think I need to play those to understand 3.” They add that they will play the other games eventually, but they don’t think they’re necessary for narrative continuity.

“Play the previous Divinity games”

“I’m not a huge RPG person,” another user says, “but I’ve played a few games that are similar, and I would say that Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2 are the best ones I’ve played.”

“I’m not sure if it’s fair to compare Baldur’s Gate to D&D,” another replies, “but for me, Divinity: Original Sin 1 and 2 are the closest thing to D&D that I’ve played in a video game.” They add that they can’t speak for the third game, but the first two are great and well worth the time.

“I haven’t played the first game but played some of the second,” another says, “and it’s a really good game, definitely something I’d recommend.” They recommend the game even though they don’t have the first game, explaining that the second game is standalone enough that they don’t feel like they’re missing anything.

Another user says that “if you haven’t played the previous Divinity games, you should. They are some of the best games I’ve ever played.”
