Bethesda head Pete Hines criticises developer for controversial Starfield main menu design
Bethesda head Pete Hines has weighed in on the Starfield main menu controversy, slamming the developer for what he deems a “disrespectful” response to fan criticism. The debate kicked off earlier this week when former World of Warcraft team lead Mark Kern suggested that the Bethesda RPG’s menu design indicates rushed development, and lack of care. The tweet racked up over 5.4 million views, with Kern backing up his claim with examples of similar menu designs from other Bethesda games.
Responding directly to Kern, Hines says the former WoW dev is being “disrespectful” by questioning the team’s “care.” He goes on to say that the menu design was “settled on early in the dev process,” and that it’s “intentional.”
“It’s not a placeholder,” Hines says. “It’s not a mistake. It was settled on early in the dev process and it’s intentional.”
Kern, who was formerly lead designer on World of Warcraft, hasn’t responded to Hines’ tweet. However, he did respond to the initial controversy surrounding the Starfield main menu, dismissing it as just a start screen.
“It’s a start screen,” Kern says. “It’s not even a real menu. I’ve seen a lot of people get very upset about it. But it’s a start screen. Calm down.”
The debate over the Starfield main menu design continues to trend, with fans mostly agreeing that it looks unfinished. Some, however, have speculated that it could be a placeholder, similar to the early Bethesda-made Fallout 4 and Skyrim main menus.
With the launch still a few weeks away, we might not get an answer any time soon. In the meantime, we’ve put together a complete Starfield Daedric Prince tier list, so you can get an idea of who’s the most powerful god before you even set foot in the wasteland.
