The Starfield direct introduces players to some exciting new things you can do on your spaceship, but we've found several hidden extras beyond the norm.

While most of these hints round out aspects of the story, whether they’re crazy extra character details or historical factoids that reveal more about Akila City’s past, we’re going to explore the things that you don’t learn about in the Starfield Direct
While we occasionally make Earth-based game comparisons, you should bear in mind that Starfield is a space game, so a lot of its conventions are going to be alien to anyone used to modern RPGs. So, for instance, one reason why we think the gifting system is so ripe for exploitation is that most role-playing games make every single item available to your character immediately, rather than only as you unlock additional slots for gear and weapons.
Here are all the Starfield Direct secrets we found:
You can equip ship perks
One of the biggest changes in Bethesda’s first foray into fully open-world games is the introduction of perks. You can equip these to your character to give them special abilities. It looks like this mechanic also works on your spaceship. In the trailer we see a shot of an upgrade menu, and the highlighted perk is called ‘Lightning Rod.’ It’s hard to be sure exactly what this does, but it looks like it gives your ship some kind of electric shield to protect against lightning strikes, and if you plan on spending a lot of time flying through storms you might want to equip this.
Your ship has a “rage quit” button
This one’s a bit of a stretch, but if you look closely at the ship console you can see a button labeled ‘EXIT.’ That’s right, someone on the Starfield team was thoughtful enough to include a “rage quit” button on your ship’s control panel. I’m not sure if this is an Easter egg or an actual in-game feature, but if you need to take a break from your space exploration you now have an official way to do it.
Someone’s got a mystery bean
In one of the shots of your ship’s kitchenette you can spot a container labeled ‘Mystery Bean.’ I’m not sure what this is referring to, but it’s definitely something you should investigate. Perhaps it’s a new flavor of energy drink for space pilots? Or a kind of space bean that unlocks new ship upgrades? Or maybe it’s just a joke about the mystery of what happens when you eat beans in zero-gravity. Whatever it is, I’m sure it’s worth your investigation.
There are Starfield comics
If you look closely at the shot of your ship’s kitchenette, you can spot a stack of Starfield comics. It’s not clear where these comics come from, but it looks like they’re part of the Starfield universe. It’s possible that these comics are in-game collectibles or side-stories that can give you more insight into the game’s plot. Or maybe they’re just there to give you something to read when you’re not exploring the stars.
You can pick up new skills
At one point in the Starfield Direct we see a shot of a character screen, and in the skill tree you can spot a few new skills. One of them is called “Space Law,” which could potentially give you access to special areas of the game or allow you to buy and sell items at better prices. You can also spot a skill called “Space Pilot,” which probably gives you bonuses to your ship’s performance. It’s not clear yet how these skills will be used, but they look like they could be quite useful.
That’s all we have time for, but with the Starfield release date just a few months away there’s plenty of time to see if any of these hidden tips help you survive your adventures in the galaxy.
