Street Fighter 6 Backward Recoveries

Want to learn about backward recoveries in Street Fighter 6? Backward recoveries have been an essential move to master since the 3DS and arcade iterations of the game. They create enough space between you and your opponent to leverage your frame advantage after getting knocked down.

As one of the most complex fighting games, backward recoveries are not only crucial comeback moves but also help put distance between fighters in match-ups with frame disadvantages. With the newest iteration of the classic fighting game series, there have been changes to many of the inputs. Here's everything you need to know about backward recoveries in Street Fighter 6.

How to Perform Backward Recovery

To perform a backward recovery in Street Fighter 6, simultaneously press two punch or kick buttons right before hitting the ground. This will immediately wake up your character, ready to start the next round. For example, you can press light punch and light kick or medium punch and medium kick to execute this move.

It is not necessary to have learned a specific special move to perform a backward recovery. It was confirmed at EVO 2022 that M. Bison can do this move without having learned the Psycho Sword special move.

In previous versions of the game, backward recoveries were difficult to punish. However, in Street Fighter 6, there are knockdown special moves that inflict more damage than before. Some fighters, such as Necalli, do not have an anti-recovery knockdown, so backward recoveries are not as crucial in the Street Fighter 6 beta. Nevertheless, you can still face heavier punishment if you experience a heavy knockdown or get hit by a heavy knockdown that has armor or absorbs. It is recommended to avoid performing backward recoveries against long- and mid-range fighters by referring to the frame advantage chart.

Heavy Knockdowns are powerful moves that prevent opponents from performing a backward wake-up. It was crucial to input the backward recovery command to avoid taking more damage. Thankfully, Capcom has toned down Heavy Knockdown prevention for Street Fighter 6. Thus, you won't always be forced to wake up at a disadvantage. Instead, you can now counter heavy knockdowns with anti-recovery knockdowns, which will be explained further in this guide.
