Super Mario Bros. Wonder: A Sneak Peek at Elephant Transformations

Will Super Mario Bros. Wonder let you play as an elephant? After all, the Toads of Subcon have a knack for bestowing Mario and friends with odd powers. Nintendo’s latest Direct reveals new details about the upcoming platformer, including the return of classic badges and a limited edition Switch.

We’ve had a look at the best upcoming games like Mario Bros. Wonder and its quirky collectibles are no different. The Nintendo Direct gives a glimpse at each character’s elephant form, including the likes of Mario, Luigi, Daisy, Peach, Toad, and Toadette. If you’re thinking that some of these may not be able to transform into pachyderms, you’re right.

We already know that Nabbit and Yoshi don’t have one of the game’s many animal transformations, but it looks like they won’t be able to transform into elephants either. A quick glimpse at the elephant forms of each character shows a distinct lack of any of the non-Mario characters, although Toadette does seem to have a slight variation.

Each character’s elephant form looks a bit different, although Daisy and Peach’s seem to stand out the most. Each transformation animation also includes a quick glimpse at the character’s standard form, so we even get to see what Mario’s standard form looks like in the Mario Bros. Wonder trailer.

The Elephant powerup itself is pretty straightforward; it allows you to break bricks, dash across gaps, carry water, and reflect projectiles. This follows the trend of previous Mario games, where each powerup and gameplay mechanic generally revolves around a single idea.

Other new powerups include Bubble, which traps enemies in bubbles, and Drill, which lets you go underground and pop out of any nearby enemy or Question Block.

Super Mario Bros. Wonder isn’t just gaining popularity because of its animal transformations, either. It’s also got a number of unique gameplay mechanics, as well as a unique aesthetic that adds a charming retro vibe to the Mario series.
