Apex Legends Introduces Kill Code: A Compelling Narrative Arc
The next Apex Legends Season could see the death of a Legend, as Respawn’s narrative lead Ashley Reed hints that the upcoming Season 18 storyline, called Kill Code, will span across the next year and incorporate cinematic animations and in-game content. As the live-service game continues to push its evolving lore in new and exciting ways, this could be a sign of major things to come.
“I’ll say this,” Reed says in the video. “I’m not getting on a soapbox, but I want all of you to think about this: Legends are not immortal. To me, this is the next level. We are going to shatter relationships, and not everyone is going to survive.”
The implications here are two-fold. One, it suggests that the relationships between the playable characters will be tested and possibly shattered, and two, that not everyone will survive the events of Kill Code. The latter point is particularly interesting, as it raises questions about the fate of skins and cosmetics associated with specific characters.
There are three potential outcomes here. The first, and perhaps least likely, is complete deletion. While Apex Legends is certainly a live service that is continually monetised through cosmetic sales, there would likely be a significant backlash from players who have spent money on the game to obtain specific skins and cosmetics.
The second possibility is that the characters in question continue to be playable, but their journeys diverge from the game state. While this seems like a reasonable assumption, it would require convergence at some point – meaning that the current game state would have to meet up with the lore.
The final option is resurrection, which is much more likely and could see Revenant be replaced by a corporate creation, much like Baptiste was. Other characters that could potentially die include Ballistic’s son Nathaniel, Loba, Lifeline, Maggie, Valkyrie, and Octane, among others.
While Reed seems rather exuberant about the fate of Apex Legends characters, her smile at the end of the video gives me pause. Perhaps I’m reading too much into it, but the notion that a major event akin to the Red Wedding is on the horizon leaves me feeling concerned.
We certainly hope that Respawn isn’t planning anything along those lines, because fans have been clamouring for a miniseries or full campaign mode for some time. While Apex Legends is one of the best battle royale games and certainly doesn’t need to change, it would be a welcome addition.
In the meantime, the introduction of Kill Code and the potential death of a Legend is certainly something I’m excited about. Apex Legends is one of the best battle royale games, and its evolving storyline and immersive lore have been praised as some of the best in the genre.
Season 18 and 19 of Apex Legends promises to deliver a compelling narrative arc that will keep you engaged throughout the year, and the inclusion of cinematic animations and additional in-game components just adds to the overall experience. Check out the video below to learn more about Kill Code.
