Barbie’s Allan: A Non-Binary Icon
Barbie’s Allan is being hailed as a Non-Binary icon, with the Barbie movie character’s refusal to assimilate into a highly-masculinized world proving relatable for queer people seeking their place in the world. Played by Michael Cera, Allan is portrayed as a man who doesn’t fit into the dominant mold of masculinity. Rather than serving beers and giving foot rubs, Allan is awkward, a loner, and serves drinks and provides massages in a world that privileges alpha males.
In a society dominated by alpha males, the importance of these types of positive portrayals cannot be understated. Whether claimed by the non-binary community or not, Allan’s character is a refreshing break from the mold of masculinity in a world dominated by Kens.
As the Barbies fall in love with human Tommy, Allan wants to escape Barbieland with them. However, he ultimately doesn’t make it, finding peace and quiet away from the Kens. But Allan’s smaller role in the movie is a favorite among many viewers, as his character’s portrayal serves as a breath of fresh air amid the Barbie drama.
Whether you’re a fan of the character or not, there’s no denying that Cera’s performance as Allan showcases his deadpan powers for good. His portrayal of masculinity is considered one of the healthiest in the film, with Allan serving as an ally to women against patriarchy and actively seeking community.
The fact that Allan dances with the Barbies further emphasizes his non-traditional masculinity, and his deadpan, almost monotone delivery is a comedic highlight of the film. Ultimately, Allan is content being himself, standing out in a world of Kens. And if that’s not a positive message we can all learn from, I don’t know what is.
