Overclockers Push DDR5 Frequency Boundaries

Overclocker ‘b1ackjack’ achieves over 9000 MHz on a DDR5 memory kit with a Ryzen 7 7800X3D system, thanks to a new update from AMD that opens up hidden settings to alleviate memory controller bottlenecks. The overclock comes after AMD’s latest AGESA 1.0.0.7b firmware update improves memory support and stability on AM5 platform, with Ryzen 7000 CPUs now able to reach 7000-8000 MHz and 6400 MHz in a 1:1 UCLK:MEMCLK ratio.

Previously, Ryzen 7 7800X3D parts could only reach around 8000-8500 MHz, but the new update includes hidden timing parameters that enhance DDR5 functionality. Overclockers have been able to push the boundaries even further with tighter timings, with b1ackjack achieving a staggering 9058 MHz overclock on a Gigabyte DDR5-8400 module.

“This is one of the fastest DDR5 overclocks seen and shows that AMD has more potential than we thought,” b1ackjack says. “I believe AMD will outperform Intel when it comes to memory Overclocking.”

AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs vs Intel Alder Lake/Raptor Lake

AM5 systems using Ryzen 7000 CPUs may very well surpass Intel’s Alder Lake/Raptor Lake CPUs in memory overclocking, especially when it comes to real-world performance.

Of course, overclocking efforts pushing memory overclocks on AMD hardware will serve as real competition for the company, especially if it leads to better Ryzen 7 gaming experiences.

Improving AMD’s CPUs with AGESA Update

The new AGESA update is also a substantial change from previous patches for Ryzen 7000 chips, meaning that AMD’s microcode engineers are making more of an effort to improve the company’s CPUs.

Overclockers breaking DDR5 frequency world records on AMD hardware will only serve to confirm the performance, and we can expect to see more companies like G.Skill jumping on the AM5 overclocking train.
