Disney Lorcana Trading Cards: A Refreshing Take on TCG

What are Disney Lorcana Trading Cards like? The newest entry in the TCG genre features some unique mechanics that are unlike anything we’ve seen before. Magic: The Gathering has dominated the scene for decades, but Disney Lorcana’s take on deck building and combat feels refreshing.

There are two big ways Disney Lorcana differs from something like Magic: The Gathering. The first is how it generates resources. Instead of dedicating cards to being lands, any card with an Inkwell icon can be used to generate resources. This means that you don’t need to dedicate any space in your deck to cards that don’t affect the board state.

The other big difference is the win condition. Instead of reducing your opponents’ life totals to zero, you have to acquire 20 Lore. Lore is represented by a counter on each card, and you can exert a character to generate more. Questing for Lore is the main mechanic of the game, which makes combat more than just trading resources and whittling down opponents’ life totals.

There are some other mechanics that make Lorcana feel refreshing. First, you can’t interact with your opponent’s cards during their turn. You have to anticipate what they might do and make a strategic decision about how to play your turn. In contrast, Magic allows players to interact with each other’s cards at any point.

Second, you can play cards in any order. You don’t have to play them in a specific order from left to right. This encourages flexibility and strategic thinking about the best way to combo your cards.

Third, unlike Magic, Lorcana doesn’t allow players to see their opponent’s hands. This restriction fosters a guessing game about what your opponent might do next, forcing you to make decisions based on limited information.

Finally, Lorcana has a different approach to mulligans. Instead of drawing a hand of seven cards and then having the option to discard one, you put all of your unwanted cards on the bottom of your deck and draw back up to seven. This keeps you from getting stuck with a hand of unusable cards and incentivizes keeping cards that can be used in the Inkwell.

Here are some other important things to know about Lorcana:

  • In a way, Lorcana ends up being a mulligan that keeps your first seven cards while putting your worst ones at the bottom of your deck. This keeps your worst cards from interfering with your next hand, making the risk of drawing up to seven cards worth it.
  • A lot of the cards in Lorcana have an Inkwell icon, making it easy to draw cards for the resource system. However, you want to keep cards that can be used in the Inkwell and have a lower cost. If you keep a six-cost card in your hand for a few turns, you end up with a lot of resources that you can’t spend.
  • There are currently two main planeswalkers in Lorcana. Mazu is a five-cost legendary blue planeswalker. She has an ability that modifies strength, defense, and agility of a character equal to the number of cards in your hand.
