Two voice actors from Genshin Impact have recently come forward, revealing that they have not been paid for at least four months of work on the popular videogame. The issue was first raised by Brandon Winckler, who has performed minor roles and additional voices for Genshin Impact. In a series of frustrated tweets, Winckler expressed their disappointment at not receiving payment and mentioned multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact HoYoverse, the game's creators.
Another voice actor, Corina Boettger, also shared their experience of not being paid and struggling to pay rent. Although Boettger did not explicitly name Genshin Impact, it became evident from the replies and retweets that they were referring to the game. Winckler showed support for Boettger's tweet, acknowledging that they are not the only ones affected and expressing hope for a resolution.
Call for better payment practices and protection
Both voice actors advocate for Genshin Impact to become a union production, emphasizing the need for improved payment practices and protection for actors. The non-union status of the game has resulted in lower pay rates and challenges in establishing payment dates for voice actors. Boettger hinted at Formosa Interactive, the studio responsible for the game's English voice recordings, potentially being involved in the payment issue. They mentioned not having been to the studio for the past two days and expressed uncertainty about the situation.
Fans responded to the tweets with messages of support, questioning how a successful game like Genshin Impact could fail to pay its actors. Some also raised the question of whether the responsibility lies with HoYoverse or Formosa Interactive.
