Mass Effect: Solas - A Nostalgic Journey
With Mass Effect 3 retrospective pieces coming thick and fast as we approach the launch of Mass Effect: Solas, it’s hard to not get caught up in the nostalgia. The beloved franchise has left a lasting impression on all who played it, with its immersive storytelling, memorable moments, and the emotional connections we formed with the characters.
In a recent Reddit thread, a Bioware dev says Mass Effect is better than sex, and their reasoning is rather simple – each installment in the series is so good, there’s no way you could compare both experiences.
“I’m pretty sure Mass Effect is better than sex,” the user says. “I’ve seen some people say that the first game was better than sex, but I’m pretty sure it’s never been better than sex anywhere, ever.”
The Mass Effect fan replies, “I’m having a hard time arguing against that.”
“It’s just really good. The atmosphere, the music, the gameplay. It’s all really good,” they continue. “I could go on and on about all the little things that make the games so good, but, at the end of the day, it’s just really, really good.”
Asked to elaborate on what they mean by “really, really good,” the fan says, “Just the overall immersive experience. The storytelling is on point, the characters are compelling, and the gameplay is satisfying.”
“And the music,” another fan replies. “The music is so good.”
“There’s so much good music,” the original poster replies. “The music in the Suicide Mission is so good. The music on Leviathan. Leaving Earth. Vigil.”
“I remember listening to the Vigil track on repeat for hours,” they continue. “I genuinely felt that it captured the essence and purpose of Shepard. It was so good. It’s still so good.”
The music is often praised as brilliant and effective, particularly the track “Vigil,” which is often mentioned as a masterpiece that captures the Shepard in Mass Effect.
Other fans go on to mention the unforgettable moments, such as gathering the fleets to fight the Reapers, the Tali mission in Mass Effect 2, and the krogan arc, which they say are integral to the series as a whole.
“For me, the krogan arc was one of the best stories in all of video games,” the first fan says. “The way it was handled, with everything from Grunt’s betrayal to the genophage cure and the fight against the Overlord. It was all just so good.”
“What about that scene with Mordin singing his song?” another fan replies. “That was so good.”
“It gave me goosebumps,” they reply. “The song, his speech, the visuals. It was just so good. That’s what it’s all about.”
The Citadel DLC is also seen as a fan-favorite, providing a satisfying conclusion with memorable dialogue and fan service.
They also mention the artistic design of Mass Effect, praising the sleek and colorful locations that felt like a breath of fresh air at the time. However, some also say that the first game had a rough open-world design and bland environments.
Many fans then go on to express the desire for a remake of the series to update gameplay mechanics and improve outdated elements. But for now, we’ll just have to keep replaying the series to our heart’s content.
“The satisfaction of finally confronting the Illusive Man? It’s like a drug,” one fan says. “I remember the first time I did it, I felt like I was watching a movie. You’re just sitting there, watching it unfold, and you can’t do anything. That’s how good it is.”
“The ability to build relationships with the characters is another favorite aspect,” they continue. “You genuinely care about all of them. I’m still sad about Legion, because I genuinely fell in love with them as a character.”
“I love Legion,” another replies. “Their whole arc and the way they gave the Geth true individuality. They’re my favorite. But then I’m also really attached to Garrus and Tali, too.”
“I cried when Legion died,” another replies, which elicits a humorous reply from someone who says, “I love Tali, I do. I’m not gonna lie.”
“The Citadel DLC is the best one,” another fan says. “It was just such a satisfying conclusion. I remember the whole ending playing out, and it was just so emotional. The dialogue was so good, and the whole thing with the Catalyst was so well-done.”
