Mortal Kombat 11 reveals guest characters in the form of kameos
The Fighting Game will apparently allow players to play as them. The kameos will be assist characters that can enhance combos and perform fatalities, but they’ll also be playable characters. That sounds like a fun system that could potentially bring back old DLC fighters in a new capacity.
The reveal comes from Brazilian retail chain Casas Bahia, which shows the kameo section on the Mortal Kombat 11 box. The shot lists six kameos, including unnamed “heroes” and “villains.” It’s unclear whether this lineup will be exclusive to the Latin American region, but it does suggest that guest fighters could show up as kameos.
Kameos are playable characters, which seems like something unique for the series. Not only will they be assist characters, but players will be able to customize them with different outfits. Most kameos won’t make it to the main roster, but I see potential for interesting complementary kameos to main DLC fighters.
For example, I’d love to see Invincible join Robo-Baraka as a kameo. That could pair up nicely with the main DLC fighter, giving players the option to form a full four-person team of Omni-Man’s Heroes. Or I’d love to see Vigilante show up as a kameo to assist Peacemaker.
The inclusion of guest kameos suggests the possibility of a post-launch campaign and a tie-in with the story components of the Invasions board game mode. It also means that players won’t have to pay to unlock these fighters, instead potentially earning them as rewards for completing story content.
I see most kameos not making it to the main roster, but I also see potential for outfits to change the look of these assist characters. We’ve seen characters like Chucky, Jason Vorhees, and Freddy Krueger thrown around as possibilities for DLC, so we could see them show up as kameos.
There’s also the question of what else the kameo system can do. The addition of Guest Characters opens up exciting possibilities for unique matchups, such as Batman and Baraka fighting side-by-side. That could hint at the potential for bringing back old DLC fighters in a new capacity via kameos.
