Red Dead Redemption on Nintendo Switch

Red Dead Redemption can run at 60fps on a Nintendo Switch, and it’s an impressive feat that raises questions about why the Rockstar port remains absent from PC. Combining some third-party tools with Switch console overclocking and custom frame rates, YouTuber Modern Vintage Gamer achieves the feat, and it’s an impressive demonstration of how the console could handle Rockstar’s open-world game. It also raises questions about why Rockstar hasn’t seen fit to bring Red Dead Redemption to PC, given its success on Switch.

Using the aforementioned tools, Modern Vintage Gamer manages to achieve Rockstar’s Western at a consistent 60fps, dipping no lower than 50fps. This is using a Nintendo Switch with the Mariko chipset, which has a slightly higher clock speed than other models and therefore achieves better performance.

Modern Vintage Gamer says that “almost every other Switch will get this too, but not as good” but does not elaborate on what ‘this’ is. It’s worth noting that attempting this feat requires a hacked Nintendo Switch, and extensive research will be required if you want to overclock the console and boost custom frame rates to the same levels.

Red Dead Redemption’s recent PS5 and Switch ports faced criticism for their pricing and lack of improvements over the original Rockstar game. Both ports were capped at 30fps, which disappointed many players who felt the original game ran better at higher frame rates. Modern Vintage Gamer’s achievement brings hope to Switch players wanting a smoother experience.

The YouTuber’s use of third-party tools also demonstrates the potential for improved performance, and it begs the question of why Rockstar hasn’t brought Red Dead Redemption to PC. The game’s recent ports faced criticism for their pricing and lack of improvements over the original Rockstar game, and the success of this endeavor raises questions about why the studio remains absent from PC.
