Super Mario RPG Remake Announced
The latest Nintendo Direct showcased a number of upcoming titles, including a surprise announcement of a remake for Super Mario RPG. The classic turn-based RPG from the ‘90s originally debuted on the Super Nintendo, before eventually coming to the Nintendo Switch as a Virtual Console download. Now, it appears that a full remake is in the works, with a release date even set for later this year.
When asked about the news on Twitter, the original game’s director, Chihiro Fujioka, expressed his surprise but seemed happy about the remake. "I am very surprised that the news about a remake has come out," Fujioka said in a translation from Twitter account @SerenesForest. "But personally, I am very pleased that there is a remake of a game that I created."
Nintendo’s Direct also didn’t reveal who is actually developing the remake. It also appears that the remake won’t involve Square Enix, the company originally responsible for making the original Super Mario RPG. Instead, the remake’s new art style has been widely compared to that of Yoshi’s Craft World, another Nintendo game that came out earlier this year.
The original game’s composer also returns to create a revamped soundtrack. Alongside Super Mario RPG, Nintendo also announced a new 2D platformer called Super Mario Bros. Wonder. The game’s art style has been met with excitement for its departure from the “New” art style introduced in 2006, which some fans feel strays too far from the series’ roots.
Fans are also thrilled with the new art style, with some even creating fan art featuring Mario’s new elephant form. The Internet is also abuzz with speculation about the possibility of Princess Peach also transforming into an elephant.
