Persona 3 Reload: A Remake with Exciting Changes

The long-awaited announcement of Persona 3 Reload confirms what fans have been hoping for: the remake of the beloved 2006 RPG is staying true to its roots. While there will be significant overhauls to the UI and visual design, bringing it more in line with the quality-of-life improvements seen in Persona 5, the core mechanics of the game remain largely intact. This includes the infamous social link mechanic, a key feature that connects players to the game's rich world.

Fans and players have long expressed a desire for the mechanics of Persona 3 to be updated, considering the game's age and the evolving expectations of players in today's gaming landscape. In particular, the fatigue system of Tartarus and the social links were cited as areas that could benefit from improvement in the remake.

In our own Persona 3 Reload preview, we also shared this sentiment, suggesting that Atlus could have justifiably made changes to the social link mechanics in the context of an overhauled game. However, in a recent interview with Kotaku, Takuya Yamaguchi, the director of Persona 3 Reload, confirmed that the game will retain its original story and social links.

While the original social links will largely remain unchanged, Yamaguchi revealed that there will be new scenarios involving characters who did not have social links in the original game. This means that players can expect a wealth of new content that expands on the existing story and deepens their connection with the characters.

One notable change is that male party members will not have social links with the protagonist. Instead, they will receive new scenarios that further develop their personalities and relationships. Yamaguchi also mentioned that the majority of dialogue in Persona 3 Reload will come from social links, with the vast majority of party conversations fully voiced. This adds a refreshing level of immersion and depth to the game.

Persona 3 Reload breaks records with its voice acting, surpassing even Persona 5 in terms of the amount of dialogue that is fully voiced. With an entirely new recording, the game offers a fresh experience for both new and returning players.

In addition to voice acting, there are other exciting gameplay changes in Persona 3 Reload. Players will now have the ability to directly command party members, adding a new layer of strategic depth to combat. The introduction of breakable objects and small conversations that occur while exploring Tartarus breathe new life into the randomly generated labyrinth, turning it into a more engaging and immersive space.

On the visual front, the first screenshots of the PC version of Persona 3 Reload running on the Unreal Engine have been revealed. The improved visuals of Tartarus showcase a departure from the monotonous floors of the past, promising a more visually appealing and varied experience.

Persona 3 Reload is set to launch in early 2024 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S. Keep an eye out for more updates and information on this highly anticipated dungeon-crawler.
