The PlayStation Portal handheld
The PlayStation Portal remote player handheld will cost $199, Sony confirms, serving as an extension to the PS5 console that you can take with you on the go. The 8-inch screen handheld boasts haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, and comes with a charging cradle.
Unveiled alongside the PlayStation Portal
The PlayStation Portal handheld was unveiled alongside the PlayStation Portal, a Wi-Fi router that enables cloud streaming through PlayStation Plus Premium. The handheld serves as an alternative to the PlayStation Vita, acting as a companion to the PS5 that you can take with you on the go.
The PlayStation Blog post features a hands-on video, where PlayStation’s Chris Norden walks us through the new handheld. It features an 8-inch LCD screen, haptic feedback, and adaptive triggers.
The PlayStation Portal remote player is intended to work with the PS5 over Wi-Fi, serving as an extension of the console. This means that you can play compatible games on the go, but won’t be able to play games that require additional hardware or PS VR2. Games still need to be installed locally on the PS5, with no cloud streaming support.
You’ll also be able to connect external audio peripherals using a 3.5mm audio jack, but there’s no support for additional accessories like the PlayStation Move Motion Controller.
While the PlayStation Portal remote player may appear to be in direct competition with Steam Deck and the Asus ROG Ally handheld, Sony says that the company is “positioning this differently than a Steam Deck competitor”.
With a price tag of $199, Sony has set the expectations by deciding exactly how much the handheld will cost. It serves as an alternative to the PlayStation Vita, which is effectively no longer supported by Sony. It’s also a cheaper option than the PlayStation TV, which was effectively discontinued in 2021.
