Introducing the PlayStation Portal

The PlayStation Portal is a real thing, and some people are really into it. I mean, really. After a Reddit user shared their design for a PlayStation handheld gaming device that resembles the image below – a “Meme Deck,” if you will – many in the community respond with both humorous comments and earnest suggestions for improvements.

The PlayStation Portal, which bears the name of the original PlayStation, is yet to be officially announced by Sony. However, the company has filed patents for a device with a shape similar to the one shown in the Reddit post, as well as a device that looks similar to the Nintendo Switch.

Some users joke about the user’s visionary status and eagerly await their next creation, including the hypothetical PS6. Others suggest creative designs for the PS6, while others bring up the possibility of regional or language-shaped versions.

Others, however, express their admiration for the “Meme Deck” and suggest legal action against Sony, perhaps in the form of a class action lawsuit. Others point out the existence of similar devices, like the Steam Deck.

Many users, however, comment on the uselessness of the PlayStation Portal, highlighting the ability to stream PS5 games to any device and the availability of other handheld gaming options, like the Nintendo Switch.

However, many see potential in the PlayStation Portal. The price, lack of Bluetooth or a headphone jack, and the need for Wi-Fi are criticized by some users, but a key selling point is identified.

“I’d buy it for the ability to continue gaming while sharing a TV with my family,” one user explains. “My kid wants to play Minecraft while I want to play Horizon Zero Dawn 2.” Others note the ability to play PS5 games anywhere with a good internet connection and cite factors like a lower price, better battery life, improved visuals, and the ability to access the PlayStation game library.

“It’s a handheld,” another user replies. “It’s not meant to be a portable console for driving a submarine.”

The lightweight and durable nature of the device is also noted, as are comparisons between the PlayStation Portal and other handheld gaming devices, such as the Nintendo Switch and the Steam Deck.

“I like handhelds because it’s just easier to hold one game and play it,” one user writes, while another expresses their preference for the PlayStation Portal over the Switch, which they see as “a portable console with a screen that can be used as a portable console.”

Some users express their desire to play specific games on the PlayStation Portal, like Oblivion. Others, meanwhile, highlight stick drift on the PlayStation Portal, as they experienced it with the DualSense controller. However, others simply express their excitement to see what happens with this new device.
