“Console wars are pointless,” say gamers as PS5 vs Switch debate rages

Console wars are the worst, and we shouldn’t let them divide us. That’s the message from some Reddit users as the PlayStation 5 vs Nintendo Switch debate rages on, with some calling for an end to petty fandom as we look towards a bright future of gaming.

PS5 vs Switch: The Debate

“The Switch is overrated, and it’s just a phone.” “The Switch is the greatest console of all time.” “PS5 vs Switch is the real war.” You’ll find all manner of opinions on both sides of the fence, but there’s a lot of crossover, too. Many of us own both consoles, and we’re all passionate about gaming – so why the need for console wars?

“Switch vs PS5” is one of the most popular topics on the PlayStation Subreddit right now, but it’s not the only one. Some users compare the Nintendo console to previous generations, while others argue that the Steam Deck is a worthy competitor (even though it’s not even out yet).

One user writes, “Switch fanboys [are] the most toxic of all,” while another replies, “Console wars are the worst, let’s focus on enjoying gaming together instead of trying to compare hardware.”

While some users compare the Nintendo Switch to phone hardware, others question its very existence. “Why is this even a thing?” one user writes, alongside a gif of Soulja Boy with his infamous game console. “I’m dead,” another replies.

In a separate thread, some users question the necessity of the Nintendo Switch at all. “If it’s the same games on both then why do you need both?” one user asks, while another replies, “Because I like having the option to play on the go.”

You’ll also find plenty of threads about the best couch co-op games on the PS5, highlighting the importance of enjoying games together. But you won’t find much discussion about Switch games on some of those same threads, which raises the question of Nintendo’s popularity on Reddit (a question we’ve explored before).

“Why aren’t there more Switch games on this subreddit?” one user asks, but others reply that it’s simply because Switch games are so popular that the subreddit is flooded with them. In another post, the lack of Nintendo games on the subreddit is listed among reasons why the Switch is overrated.

One user writes, “I feel like there was always a lot of Switch content on r/PlayStation but it really slowed down after the Switch launched and hasn’t really picked up since.” However, they go on to acknowledge that the console’s popularity is real, and the slow release of big Nintendo games is part of the reason why.

Elsewhere, there are suggestions for couch co-op games on the PS5, and plenty of praise for the fun of playing together. One user writes, “I love having so many consoles but I don’t have much time for games anymore. I’d love to share what I have but I don’t have time to play,” expressing frustration at the realities of modern life.

Embracing the Value of Playing Games with Friends

The answer, I would suggest, is to stop getting hung up on console brands and focus instead on the value of playing games with friends. If you’re a Nintendo fan and you have Switch, you’re probably going to end up with a lot of Nintendo games. If you’re a PlayStation fan, you’ll likely end up with a lot of PlayStation games.

“But the PlayStation games are better,” you might say. Maybe. In some cases, certainly. But there’s no sense in getting hung up on that, because the games all end up looking the same – and, if you ask me, that’s a good thing. What’s important is that you get to enjoy all of these amazing games with your friends, and that’s what consoles are for.
