Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart has been a long time coming, but after its PC debut earlier this year, the PlayStation 4 port has been receiving mixed reviews. According to a recent Digital Foundry report, despite being a quality port, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart performs poorly on PS4 HDD, making it almost unplayable.

First released in 2002, Ratchet & Clank is one of Sony's oldest and most beloved series. Rift Apart is the latest entry, and developer Insomniac Games' claim that an SSD is not necessary for the game sparked controversy. However, it looks like they were right all along, as Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart struggles to run on a PS4 HDD, confirming the need for PS5's advanced hardware.

Earlier this year, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart made its debut on PC to positive reviews. The quality port was celebrated as a welcome addition to the series, and the game's launch trailer even made the rounds on YouTube and Twitch as a showcase for the PS5's power.

However, recent tests by Digital Foundry demonstrate that the game's performance on base PS4 hardware is less than ideal. The report states that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart stutters and experiences freezing when loading new areas or entering rifts.

"Having played Rift Apart on a base PlayStation 4, we can say that these issues aren't just present on higher-end consoles," Digital Foundry writes. "The game struggles to reach 30fps on the base model, and even discrete graphics cards struggle to stabilize performance."

The report confirms that Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart relies heavily on the PlayStation 5's hardware capabilities, especially its SSD. However, developer Insomniac Games cheekily confirmed the validity of their claims via a tweet.
