Looking back at the PS3
Looking back at old gaming magazines, it’s clear that there was a lot of hype and unrealistic predictions for the PS3. Many of you feel that Sony lost sight of what people actually wanted with that console, focusing too much on the “more is better” approach. Given the PS5’s limited USB ports, it seems that the same thing might be happening all over again.
User opinions on the lack of USB ports
The lack of USB ports on the PS5 has been a topic of discussion among you, and it’s heating up the comments section. Some of you argue that the existing ports on the PS5 are sufficient, pointing out that you can use charging docks or wall blocks if you need extra. Others point out that certain accessories, like the PSVR, can take up multiple ports and that more would be beneficial.
“I’m disappointed there aren’t more USB ports on the PS5,” one of you says. “I connect my DS4, DS4 controller charger, and VR headset to my PS4 and that already uses up three ports. I use a charging dock for the DS4, but it’s not compatible with the PSVR headset.” Others bring up the fact that Microsoft made a similar mistake with the Xbox One, focusing on features like cable TV instead of what gamers really wanted.
Opinions on the PS3's controller
The design of the PS3’s controller is something I’ve always found interesting, as well. Many of you bring up its “ergonomic” shape and how it doesn’t fit in your hand quite right. Some of you defend the controller, describing it as “perfect” and pointing out that you can’t please everyone. I’d love to see this controller redesigned, as well.
Debate about the PS3
The PlayStation 3 was obviously a divisive console, and there’s a lot more to discuss about it. Perhaps we’ll revisit it in a future article, but for now, something else is brewing in the comments section. It started with a comment about the lack of USB ports, but it’s devolved into a debate about whether the PS3 was what people actually wanted at the time.
“The PS3 was ahead of its time in terms of features and technology,” one user explains. “Unfortunately, its complexity made it difficult for developers to create high-quality games.” “Of course it was,” another replies. “It offered backward compatibility, and other advanced features, but people were too busy being consumers and thinking about what they could consume.”
“I loved the PS3,” one user says. “I had a PS3 for years and used it for everything until I switched to the PS4. I loved the joypad design as well. Sony had everything right except the price.” “The joypad design was initially supposed to be different,” another replies. “But at the last minute they decided to change it due to negative reactions.”
“The Xbox 360 joypad was awful and the Xbox One standard controller was really awful as well. Sony was right in sticking with the same design.” “Microsoft was right to change the design,” another replies. “The Xbox 360 joypad was awful. The Xbox One standard controller was also awful. Sony was wrong in sticking with the same design. There’s nothing wrong with change for the sake of change.”
Comments on inappropriate content
“The author’s comment about videochat and surfing porn is really inappropriate,” another user says. “I don’t mind the humor in these magazines, but that’s a bit much.” Another commenter points out that these types of magazines, reminiscent of lads’ magazines, were popular back in the day. They’d often include comments from gamers about what they’d like to do to female characters from games and comments about “what’s in the box,” much like the infamous E3 2013 Microsoft press conference.
“We need to take this in a more serious direction if we want to answer the question about what gamers really want,” another user says. “The PlayStation 3 was a good console. It was ahead of its time and focused on technology,” they continue. “However, it was too expensive, and Sony forgot the most important thing: games. Microsoft learned from Sony’s mistakes with the Xbox 360 and created the best console ever.”
“Microsoft made the same mistakes with the Xbox One,” another user replies. “It was also too expensive, and Microsoft forgot the most important thing: games. Sony focused too much on the technology, but it learned from its mistakes and created the best console of all time.”
