The Apple M3 SoC chip, which is expected to be featured in a new Mac Mini refresh, won’t increase CPU or GPU core count, new information suggests. The base M3 will apparently include 4P + 4E cores, split evenly between performance and efficiency cores, alongside 10 GPU cores and 24 GB of RAM. That will put it on a parity with the current Apple M2 SoC, which has the same number of CPU and GPU cores.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who has a strong track record when it comes to Apple-focused leaks, shares the information about the M3 in his regular Apple-focused newsletter. He says that the chip is being tested at Apple’s headquarters for use in upcoming Mac models, which could include a refreshed Mac Mini.

Gurman says that the M3 chip won’t offer an increase in core count compared to previous generations, with the base model including 4P + 4E CPU cores. However, he notes that other improvements will come alongside the SoC, and it will be built using TSMC’s N3 fabrication technology to provide improved efficiency and density.

Higher-tier M3 chips, such as the M3 Pro and M3 Max, are likely to see increased core counts. Gurman says the M3 Pro will include 12 CPU cores and 18 graphics cores, while the M3 Max could include 14 CPU cores and “over 40” graphics cores.

Apple is widely expected to announce new Macs featuring the M3 processor in October, which could help revive interest in its Mac business. Apple’s Mac sales have recently experienced a decline in quarterly sales.
