Disney Lorcana: A Musical Trading Card Game

The latest Disney Trading Card Game announcement comes from the folks at IDW Publishing, who have worked with Disney on previous TCGs such as Mickey Mouse and Duck Tales. The new game, titled Disney Lorcana, features beloved Disney characters in a trading card game that features Song cards, which will be music-themed.

It’s still early days, but the initial concept art for the game reveals an opening sequence inspired by The Lion King, and a range of potential Song cards.

While Song cards will be played during gameplay, and will presumably activate the songs that feature on the cards, we don’t know much else about them yet. But some of the Song cards revealed so far include ‘Snuff Out the Light’ from The Emperor’s New Groove and ‘A Whole New World’ from Aladdin.

Some of the other potential Song cards include ‘When You Wish Upon a Star’ from Pinocchio, which may allow a character to be immune from damage during their turn; ‘Go the Distance’ from Hercules, which could add extra damage during challenges for Ruby characters; ‘Higitus Figitus’ from The Sword in the Stone, which may allow you to instantly banish a character without depleting your Willpower; and ‘Beauty and the Beast’ from Beauty and the Beast, which could potentially allow you to discard unhelpful cards, then draw new ones that you may need right away.

We’re also holding out hope for ‘How Far I’ll Go’ from Moana, which could introduce a new mechanic that allows you to simultaneously quest and challenge characters. Similarly, ‘You’re Welcome’ from Moana might grant you an additional ink on top of the ink of placed cards.

Whoever is designing the Song cards certainly has a keen ear for musical hits, and we hope the rest of the soundtrack is as catchy as these tracks. It’s also worth pointing out that some of these cards hint at potential mechanics – ‘Zero to Hero’ from Hercules, for example, might remove damage from a character and restore your Willpower, while ‘Almost There’ from The Princess and the Frog could be used to represent being close to winning or banishing a character.

While we don’t know too much about the actual game yet, it appears that the art style and card designs will be in the vein of recent trading card offerings from IDW, such as the aforementioned Mickey Mouse game. This means that, while it will obviously take on its own unique flair, it will still look very much like a Disney game.

We’re also hoping that it will play like a Disney game too, and that the Song cards will feature a lot of the memorable songs from the various Disney movies. A few of our favorites include ‘Out There’ from The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which could introduce a new hidden mechanic or the ability to peek at an opponent’s inkwell; ‘Somebody’s Got Your Back’ from The Incredibles, which could potentially allow another character to provide support in a challenge; and ‘I See The Light’ from Tangled, which you may use to add extra damage to your squad’s overall attack.
