Disney Lorcana Shift Mechanic
Want to know more about the Disney Lorcana Shift mechanic? Shift is a keyword you’ll come across in your adventures in Llanowar, and it allows you to play Character cards for a reduced ink cost. We’ll explain how this mechanic works, as well as provide an example of how you might use it to surprise your opponent and gain an edge in the turn-based Card Game.
The Shift keyword can be found on specific Character cards, allowing that card to be played from hand at a lower cost. First things first, you need to understand that you can only Shift a Character if you already have one with the same main name already in play. Let’s take a look at an example from the starter deck to explain.
As you can see from this example, the main name – Rapunzel – of the card being played needs to match that of the Character already in play. Once you’ve met this condition, the card will be played from hand at a lower cost. In this instance, Rapunzel will cost just two ink rather than three.
When Shifted onto an existing card, the Shift card overwrites that Character’s characteristics, stats, and abilities. However, it does inherit any damage, exertion, and dried ink from the original Character.
Character Shifted onto a Shifted card will have their damage, exertion, and ink status reset. However, they will retain their base stats and any abilities they may have. If the ink on the original Character has dried, you can use the Shifted card immediately, allowing you to challenge, quest, and exert in the same turn the Shifted card enters play.
The Shift mechanic isn’t as powerful as some of the other keywords we’ve discussed in our Disney Lorcana guide, but it does offer you a strategic opportunity to play multiple Characters for a lower cost. This can be enough to catch your opponent off guard and save you precious ink in the process.
The other benefit to the Shift keyword is that it allows you to deploy powerful Characters earlier in the game, gaining you a small advantage by playing your best cards sooner. The cost reduction isn’t a huge benefit since you still need to play another Character to Shift onto, but it’s enough to save you a few ink.
