Disney Lorcana Expands Character Roster

Walt Disney Animation Studios is the central focus of Disney Lorcana, but the game may include characters from Pixar and Star Wars, among other Disney IPs.

Speaking to TheGamer, Ravensburger and developer Team-Xray explain that the Disney Lorcana characters list may grow to include characters from Pixar and Star Wars, among other Disney IPs.

“I think the scope of the game is still to be determined,” co-designer Ryan Miller says. “There are so many options when it comes to which characters and movies, and even shorts, that we can use. We’re still in the process of working out which ones will be in the first set, and which ones will be saved for later expansions.”

The first chapter of Disney Lorcana focuses on characters from Walt Disney Animation Studios, as confirmed by a press release from Ravensburger. This studio is primarily responsible for the classic Disney films and shorts that many people know and love, dating back to the 1920s.

Most of the cards in Disney Lorcana are based on movies and shorts produced by this studio, with a few exceptions. The Musketeer cards are based on a Disneytoon Studios film, a division of WDAS responsible for films like The Prince and the Pauper and Ralph Breaks the Internet.

“The decision to only feature WDAS films in The First Chapter was a creative choice,” Miller explains. “A lot of games will start with lesser known IPs and then move on to the hits. We felt like that was taking a risk – like we were going to play some lesser-known songs to start, then we’d introduce the hits, and then maybe something new. We thought it’d be better to start with the hits and then maybe introduce something new.”

Miller compares this decision to gaining trust as a DJ: you play the familiar songs people know and love, then you introduce the new stuff people are excited to hear. Starting with the big hits – the beloved classic Disney films – allows Lorcana to establish an identity, and helps it resonate with players right away.

“I think we’ll see characters from Pixar and other Disney IPs in the future,” Miller teases. “It’s not like we’re avoiding those.”

Disney Lorcana plans to release four expansions per year, allowing for growth and exploration of different directions. Miller says they want to start with the hits, the beloved classic Disney films, before delving into more obscure properties that some players may not be as familiar with.

“We want to make sure [Lorcana] gets off to a strong start before we get into some of those more niche things,” Miller says. “It’s good to have a well-rounded game that appeals to fans of both classic and lesser-known Disney properties.”
