A new Belle, Inventive Engineer card in Disney Lorcana

A new Belle, Inventive Engineer card in Disney Lorcana is so good it almost makes me mad. The reimagining of the classic Disney character feels organic, suits the character to a tee, and offers up new storytelling potential within the game. The card, and others like it in Lorcana, is a standout example of the care and curation that goes into each and every Disney Lorcana card, and the potential they hold for future chapters and driving the game’s lore forward.

In my Lorcana review, I touch on the three categories of card designs in the game, with Belle falling into the Dreamborn category, which “reimagines classic characters in fresh new ways, using the potential of their Dreamborn abilities and personalities to offer a fresh take on the characters that we know and love.” Dreamborn characters in Lorcana feel organic and true to the spirit of the original character, but often take light changes that honor their essence.

In Belle’s case, she’s cast as a scientist, taking after her father’s love for engineering and gadgetry. While this isn’t a huge leap from her intelligent and directionless portrayal in the movie, it’s a small one that feels right.

Belle’s artwork in the card is vibrant, with better background details, and a warm glow that contrasts with Lilo’s artwork, which I felt took a bigger leap and strayed into the realm of “weird multiverse ideas” and lacked connection to Lilo’s personality.

Belle’s Dreamborn card represents the storytelling power and importance of Disney Lorcana cards. Each card is crafted with care and attention, and the potential of Dreamborn characters like her make them crucial to the evolving lore of Lorcana. Dreamborn cards offer a snapshot of new ideas and storytelling possibilities within the game, and are distinct from Storyborn cards, which depict the characters as we know them from the movies. Floodborn cards, on the other hand, hold potential for future chapters and drive the game’s lore forward.

If you’ve played Lorcana, you’ll know that some Dreamborn cards feel like natural fits, while others take a leap that makes you do a double take. Belle, Inventive Engineer falls into the former category, and is a testament to the care and curation of the art in Lorcana, with each card being perfectly crafted.
