Killing Floor 3
Killing Floor 3 is real, as Tripwire announces the long-awaited follow-up to its Unreal Tournament 2004 mod and standalone 2009 game in a trailer and gameplay presentation at Gamescom. A third installment in the co-op zombie FPS series, Killing Floor 3 continues the series’ established over-the-top style with a new futuristic setting and even more gore.
Originally launching as a mod for Unreal Tournament 2004, Killing Floor began life as a standalone game in 2009. The co-op shooter series has seen two entries, with Killing Floor 2 released in 2016 and continuing to have a dedicated player base on PC. The Killing Floor 3 announcement trailer (below) reveals that the game will be another class-based shooter, featuring up to six players fighting waves of zombies and grotesque bosses.
Set 70 years after the events of Killing Floor 2, Killing Floor 3 takes place in a future where the rebel group Nightfall battles against bio-engineered monstrosities called Zeds created by the megacorp Horzine. Leveraging the power of Unreal Engine 5 to enhance its graphical fidelity and maintain the series’ emphasis on gore, Killing Floor 3 is currently in development for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, but with no release date announced yet.
While the announcement trailer (below) is light on gameplay, it does reveal that the game’s Zed hordes will be joined by bosses, with the first shown being a massive, two-headed beast that crashes through the roof of a diner. Judging by the trailer, Killing Floor 3 will continue the series’ class-based approach, with players picking from Shotgunner, Demolisher, Sharpshooter, and Tank.
The Killing Floor 3 Steam page also indicates that the game is “coming soon,” so it shouldn’t be too long before we get to try it for ourselves.
