Can You Deactivate or Locate a Stolen PS5 and Xbox?

A user has had their Xbox and PS5 stolen and wants to know if they can deactivate or locate them remotely. First, they want to know if they can deactivate them, and second, if they can locate the consoles with the help of the police and the manufacturers. Many users suggest that deactivating the consoles remotely is not a guaranteed solution, as it essentially gives the thief ownership. However, some users think that the police may prioritize investigating theft cases involving consoles as they are considered high-value items.

“My Xbox and PS5 were stolen from my house during a break-in. Is there any way I can deactivate the consoles remotely or locate them with the help of the police and the manufacturers?”

“I’m sorry to hear that. It’s hard to say without knowing more,” replies one user. “The police may prioritize investigating theft cases involving consoles as they are considered high-value items,” they add. However, they also stress that deactivation may not help as it would still leave the consoles in the hands of the thief.

Some users share personal experiences of having valuable items stolen and the lack of action taken by the police. “I had a friend’s bike stolen, and the police didn’t care. I had another friend’s laptop stolen, and the police didn’t care. I had a friend’s gold necklace stolen, and the police didn’t care,” one user writes. “I’m not saying don’t file a police report. I’m just saying it doesn’t matter what you file a police report about, they’re going to treat it like garbage unless it’s murder, rape, or some other serious crime,” they add.

“The police won’t do anything. I recommend changing your passwords to lock out the thieves. Consider opening a police case,” another user advises. “You can also contact Microsoft support and Sony support and let them know the situation. Changing the password of a PlayStation account will log it out of all devices it is currently logged in on,” they add.

Deactivating Xbox and PS5 Remotely

“I can’t think of anything that would deactivate the console from afar,” one user shares. “File a police report with them and provide proof of purchase and serial numbers,” they add.

“Contact Xbox and tell them the consoles were stolen,” another user suggests. “They’ll help you deactivate them.” However, they also note that Xbox allows deactivation through their website. Other users recommend contacting PlayStation and Microsoft to check if there is any way to deactivate the consoles remotely.

“Go to settings on both devices and deactivate them,” a user replies to a comment about the stolen Xbox. “You can do it on the website. Just type in the serial number and it will let you do it. Also, file a police report and give them the serial numbers,” they add.

“Change all the passwords and remove them from your accounts. Contact the support of Microsoft and Sony. File a police report with proof of purchase and serial numbers,” another user shares.

“There aren’t any blacklisted PS5 consoles. Yet,” another user replies, making a reference to the fact that blacklisted Xbox consoles exist, which renders them useless for online services. However, they lack further information on the topic.

“I’ve had my PS5 stolen,” one user shares. “I changed the password on my account and deactivated the console through the PlayStation website. I’d also recommend filing a police report with proof of purchase and serial numbers,” they add.

Deactivating Account on Sony

“I think you can deactivate the account on Sony’s website,” a user suggests. “I don’t know if it can be done through the website,” they reply to another comment. “You can deactivate the account and remove the licenses,” they add.

“When you deactivate the account, you’ll reclaim the licenses and remove any credit or debit card information,” another user explains.
