10 great role-playing ideas for your next Skyrim playthrough
Need some ideas for your 1432nd Skyrim character? Well, we’ve all got that one friend that keeps making the same character, but you’re better than that. Skyrim offers endless possibilities for Role-playing with its vast world and character customization options, and we’re here to offer some inspiration.
Embracing your inner role-player adds a unique twist to the game, challenging you to think creatively and approach challenges in new ways. What would a cowardly warrior build do when cornered by a frost troll? Would a fire mage build even bother with stealth and subterfuge, or just scorch everything in sight? Role-playing can be a great way to refresh your experience of Skyrim, so here are some ideas for role-playing in Skyrim, and the character builds you’ll need to make it work.
Best Skyrim role-playing builds
Here are some of our favourite role-playing ideas in Skyrim:
Hit list
Assassin’s Creed, Assassin’s Creed 2, and Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood are some of the best games ever made, and role-playing as an assassin in Skyrim can be a lot of fun. In a role-playing scenario, you create a character with a hit list, and assassinate everyone who gets on your nerves. You can also embrace your inner bard, being insufferable while mastering speech skills, and hiring muscle for adventuring. Try to avoid combat where possible, relying on your followers to deal with threats, and sprinting through dark caves to avoid conflict.
Ice mage-warrior
Ice magic is one of the best types of wizardry in Skyrim, and an ice mage-warrior build can be devastating in combat. Relying on ice magic exclusively is a good role-playing challenge, as you will need to avoid heat to simulate weakness. It will be difficult to complete some quests that require you to use fire magic or melee weapons, but you will be a formidable opponent in battle.
Mage kleptomaniac
Stealing is an integral part of the Elder Scrolls games, and if you want to embrace your inner kleptomaniac, you can role-play the consequences along the way. This can be a great way to add a little spice to standard Skyrim gameplay, setting yourself challenges along the way, such as stealing one item from every city.
Martial artist
Being a mage-warrior is all well and good, but don’t you want to punch someone in the face? Role-playing as a martial artist can be fun, relying solely on your fists for combat and impressing assassin friends. You will have to avoid most fights, but the few enemies you do encounter will be quickly dispatched with your devastating martial arts moves.
Mass murderer
If you have an uncontrollable urge to kill everyone you see, and you don’t want to role-play as a more complex character, then why not just embrace your true self? Navigating the challenges that arise from killing everyone you meet can be fun, as you will be an unpredictable force.
Batman
This one is for the kids. Role-playing as Batman adds a fantasy twist to the caped crusader, delivering justice in Skyrim’s cities. It’s up to you how you want to interpret Batman. You could play a role-playing game where you are a jaded vigilante who is trying to make amends, or a role-playing game where you are the biggest egomaniac of all time, but it’s your city, and you can do what you like.
Insert yourself
The great thing about role-playing is that you can just insert yourself into the game, making decisions based on your own preferences and personality. For example, if you are someone who loves to steal, you can role-play as a kleptomaniac. If you like to explore, you could role-play as someone who loves to trek across the lands, taking in the beauty of Skyrim. The possibilities are endless.
Dovahkiin healer
Healing magic is one of the most useful types of wizardry in Skyrim, and while it is not always the most effective in combat, it can be vital in keeping your health and stamina up to complete quests.
