Skyrim's Dragon Fights: A Timeless Experience
Looking back on Skyrim's dragon fights, they may be janky and repetitive. But, in all honesty, there's still something special about them. Perhaps it's the sense of scale and the sheer power of these beasts, or that you're taking them down with a small army of your own followers at your back.
Skyrim's best boss fights are often cited as being the ones against Alduin and Miraak, and I'm inclined to agree. The way you can see them coming from a distance, the sense of destruction the gates brought, and the fact that you could send dragon skeletons flying into the sky with a single well-placed spell - these are just some of the things that come to mind when I think back on my time with Skyrim. Skyrim mods can also enhance dragon fights, with various combat overhauls available to change how you approach them.
The very first time I stepped into a dragon's den in Skyrim, I was blown away by the scale of the fights. Skyrim's dynamic and cinematic boss fights were groundbreaking for their time, and they're still highly regarded even now. For me, they started to lose their appeal after a while, mainly because of how repetitive the gameplay mechanics become.
There are other great moments in Skyrim, such as sending a dragon's head flying with Lucien, a mod that improves follower interactions, and making the game feel a little less lonely. I also miss the sense of destruction that Oblivion Gates brought, with some players citing them as some of the most memorable moments in the game.
When it comes to the best dragon fight in gaming history, there's a lot of debate, but mentions of Monster Hunter, Elden Ring, and even Dragon's Dogma come up. Personally, I'd love to see a game take some inspiration from Skyrim and do something similar, with a bit more finesse.
Despite the flaws in Skyrim's dragon fights, there are still some great mods that improve upon them and make the game feel a bit more like a brand-new experience. Dragon's Dogma's fights are considered some of the best in the industry, and the mod Enderal offers a completely new gaming experience within Skyrim itself.
